Ever thinning blue line 👇 Budget challenges which have resulted in reduced officer numbers will lead to victims being failed and criminals being dealt with in an “inferior manner”, frontline cops have warned. A series of damning emails from officers across the country have highlighted the dire state of conditions they are facing, including cops working on shifts below minimum staffing levels, increased stress, insufficient resources and elapsed safety training. The Scottish Police Federation (SPF) called for members to report the impact budget constraints were having on the front line, ahead of the recent Scottish budget which saw an unexpected increase for policing. Officers reported a worrying trend of low morale, decreasing numbers, and time spent dealing with mental health calls. A crackdown on overtime could also lead to cases not being concluded properly, they warned. One officer wrote: “Due to the cuts on overtime I fear very quickly things will fall through the cracks, instructions will be misunderstood. “Officers not being able to stay on for an extra 30 mins to two hours max to complete packages, custody cases etc and hand them over to oncoming shifts means that, inevitably somewhere along the line, a victim will be failed and an accused will, to put it generally, be dealt with in an inferior manner compared to what they otherwise would.” Read the full story here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/d9vadRY3 ✍️ Gemma Fraser

Deducting staff #salary for coming late is a crime except it is stated in the contract of #employment. Even at that, before any deduction can be made, there must have been verbal warning, written warning issued at least twice and duly acknowledged by the employee. Also, the #organisation can create a policy that talks about disciplinary measures for lateness, absenteeism and so on. Nonetheless, punishing staff through #deduction of their salary is not right as It is not statutory. For staff to perform optimally, constant training, improved staff welfare and adequate #reward system should be put in place. A staff may resume early, close late and still not #productive while another may resume late and still be highly productive.

The recent King’s speech has introduced important changes: employees will now be eligible for statutory sick pay (SSP) from their first day of employment. In addition, Labour plans to abolish the Lower Earning Limit (LEL), enabling employees to claim SSP immediately. These updates are set to take effect within the first 100 days and will bring changes for both employers and employees. If you have any questions or need guidance on this or other legislation, contact HR:4UK to speak with our expert advisers. Each time the DOL increases the salary threshold, it leads to litigation, extensive documentation, research, hours of discussion, lobbyist influence ($), and delays. The simple answer is to pay employees for their labor. If we have an established forty-hour week for non-exempt workers, pay them for any hours worked over 40. If it is mandatory, pay OT. If organizations want to avoid paying OT, hire more workers. Salaried personnel's pay is calculated by 2080 hours per year. Companies should assign them 40 hours of work. If the companies need employees to work more than 40 hours, they should pay them additional for their extra labor or hire more employees. The profit margin for corporations is unprecedented unless you consider slavery, which was, and still is, the most profitable labor model. Total household wealth was $139.1 trillion, with about 131 million families. The top 10% of families own almost three-quarters of the total wealth. The following 40% of families own almost a quarter of the total wealth. The bottom 50% of families owned only 2% of the total wealth. 50% of American families own 2% of household wealth. It is time to end this disparity. What is the breaking point for Americans? It isn't poverty, homelessness, working multiple jobs, prison labor or child labor. Tiny homes, living in cars, camper living, multi-generations sharing a home and adult kids never leaving home are the new survival trends in the U.S. Government/corporate legislation is not working for at least 50% of this population. What ideas do you have for changing the disparity monster?

On June 28, in a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court overruled a 40-year-old legal doctrine that deferred to federal agencies' interpretation of existing laws. *What is this legal doctrine, and why does it matter?* In overturning this doctrine, known as the Chevron deference, the Supreme Court gave courts authority to exercise independent judgment in deciding questions of law arising from the actions of a federal agency, instead of deferring to the agency's interpretation. Previously, when ambiguity led to disputes, courts deferred to the interpretation of the federal agency charged with administering the law. Now, the Supreme Court emphasized, the only question that matters is: “Does the statute authorize the challenged agency action?” This exposes federal agency rules to greater court scrutiny moving forward, including: - The #FTC rule banning non-compete agreements; - The #DOL's new salary thresholds for overtime exemption; and - The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' (#CMS) interpretation of various #healthcare regulations. This Supreme Court decision does not automatically overturn any federal rules. However, more legal challenges are expected, seeking to limit the rulemaking power of federal agencies.

Let's talk about workers' comp. It's kind of like a safety net for employees who get hurt or sick on the job and helps cover things like wages, medical bills and rehab costs. But here's the thing, only 31% of workers received any compensation in 2023 and in 2021-2022, 3.5% of workers were injured at work but again only 31% of these workers got help. The rules vary by state and if your injury doesn't meet the criteria you could be left high and dry without any income. https://lnkd.in/gJ4y2Yni

Comptroller DiNapoli Criticizes Yonkers and Airmont Budgets New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has issued reports critical of the 2024-2025 budgets for the City of Yonkers and the Village of Airmont. 📊💼 DiNapoli's review of Yonkers' budget found several revenue and expenditure projections to be unreasonable. The city continues using debt for recurring costs and relies on $87.9 million in nonrecurring revenue, which may not be achievable. Notable concerns include underestimations for police overtime, medical insurance, employee retirement, and other key areas. Additionally, the Yonkers Public School District faces a $61.9 million deficit. 📉🏫 Nine recommendations were made to Yonkers, including finding additional funding sources and amending cost figures. In Rockland County, Airmont's Board of Trustees failed to audit vendor invoices before payment, leading to overpayments. The review of 30 claims totaling $883,765 found none were audited. One vendor was overpaid $36,905 for snow plowing services, and six claims totaling $42,406 lacked proper documentation. DiNapoli recommended a thorough audit of claims prior to payment to ensure accuracy and appropriateness. 📝❗ #westfaironline #westchester #mywestchester #westchestercountyny #westchesterny #westchesternewyork #newfairfieldct #fairfieldct #fairfieldcountyct @westfaironline @NYS.Comptroller - Thomas DiNapoli @cityofyonkers - City of Yonkers @rocklandcountygov - Rockland County Government

A $98.3 million Hospital Wage Hour Settlement Who is watching wage and hour practices at your company? Employers beware. Prosecutors in many states are moving toward filing criminal charges against employers due to wage fraud. A jury found that Providence Health & Services must pay almost $100 million in compensatory damages to more 33,000 employees. Wage and hour fraud on an extraordinary level occurred for years. Was this a mistake or intentional? The employer systematically underpaid the employees by rounding time clocks to the nearest fifteen-minute increment. Additionally, Providence failed to provide caregivers a second meal period if they worked a ten hour shift as required under Washington law. I am frequently posting about the seemingly endless pandemic of workplace violations. Human resources must implement oversight of workplace activities and audit wage and hour issues, particularly when there are remote locations, in many cases, hundreds of locations. An employer must ensure that employees have a secure process to report incidents and the knowledge that complaints will be investigated. The incredible number of wage violations at well-known corporations is astonishing. Please click to follow Barb J. Governor Lamont Vetoes Bill for Striking Workers On June 11, Governor Ned Lamont vetoed a bill that would have allocated $3 million for the State Comptroller to distribute to striking low-income workers and their families, citing vague wording. 🚫💼 “While the intention to provide assistance to low-income workers is commendable, there are significant concerns with the language as drafted,” Lamont wrote in his decision. Republicans welcomed the veto, criticizing the bill as detrimental to job creators. 📝🏛️ Lamont’s decision disappointed many Democrats. Connecticut Senate President Pro Tempore Martin Looney and Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff stated, “H.B. 5431 would have had a limited impact on employers and businesses and was designed to address an increase in an employer’s unemployment compensation costs by providing state funds to meet this need. We are determined to return with the original concept which will address the governor’s concern regarding eligibility criteria.” They highlighted that neighboring states like New York and New Jersey have passed similar legislation, providing unemployment compensation to workers on strike for two weeks or more. These bills were signed into law by Democratic governors. Looney and Duff emphasized that strikes occur due to employers' refusal to bargain in good faith, causing hardships for workers that the bill aimed to alleviate. 📊💬 #westfaironline #westchester #mywestchester #westchestercountyny #westchesterny #westchesternewyork #newfairfieldct #fairfieldct #fairfieldcountyct @westfaironline @govnedlamont - Governor Ned Lamont @ctsenatedems - Connecticut Senate Democrats @CTGOP - Connecticut Republicans
