DeepSeek AI claims to have developed its LLM for a small fraction of what’s been spent on GPT-4, Gemini, or Claude. This certainly makes me question if we should believe the DeepSeek claims. Are they hiding the true costs or cutting corners in ways that may limit its capabilities and impact? Nonetheless, it further calls into question the monetization model of Big AI. Either AI is vastly cheaper to build than we’ve been led to believe, or the economics of large-scale AI remain highly uncertain at best.
