A Hidden Sci-Fi Gem No One Talks About Let’s shine a light on Captive State, shall we? This sci-fi thriller should have set the world on fire, but instead, it’s been hiding in plain sight like some forgotten relic. Ganz always got a soft spot for these under-the-radar masterpieces. And honestly, we get why. Set in a dystopian Chicago where aliens have taken over, Captive State is all grit and no glitter, raw, unfiltered, and bursting with a story that pulls no punches. It’s not the loud, formulaic blockbuster that tries to spoon-feed you; it’s the kind of film that grabs you by the collar and makes you think. It’s about people pushing back, survival, the quiet resistance that grows in the cracks. That’s the kind of storytelling that hits you right in the gut. But you know what’s wild? Most folks never even gave it a chance. Maybe it’s because Captive State doesn’t fit neatly into the Hollywood mold - it’s too busy being good to be flashy. And that’s where Ganz finds his joy: in the stories that are too honest, too compelling to worry about playing by the rules. Films like this don’t need to scream for attention; they tell their own truth. And Ganz? He loves that. He’s all about the ones that dig deep and don’t care if the world’s watching. So, if you’re scrolling through sci-fi flicks and sick of the same old noise, give Captive State a go. It might just remind you that real storytelling doesn’t come with neon lights and fireworks, it comes with heart. In a world obsessed with the loud and the obvious, sometimes it’s the quiet tales that echo the loudest. 🎥👽

I am very excited to announce the release of my movie: Redeveloping Hope. 🎉 An educational movie about impact investing It is a cinematized business case study -- ideal for MBA, EMBA and other students and curious practitioners I co-wrote it with professional screenwriters and it is played by professional actors. Huge effort from many people, led by Kate (Wen) Zhu. Working hard to manage to pull this out with very limited resources. All the people in the thanking section at the end are heroes. Kate came to do an MBA after completing cinema studies and voila! Central character / Hero is Eric A. Clement -- a superstar alumni of ours. Story is about a real estate project in the Bronx. It shows the central trade-off (and traps) facing people who want to do impact investing, and the necessity to master financial tools such as financial modelling and financial engineering (cash sweeps, capital structure) in order to maximize positive externalities (social impact). It is about the benefits of bringing rigour and technical financial knowledge to that space. You can watch it on youtube but it does not appear on general searches (it is a necessary condition to be able to submit to festivals 🤞). It is like a private viewing, just for you 😀 As a teacher, you are encouraged to use it in the classroom. 🙏 On my website you will find the written case study, the data etc. I will also give away some teaching notes. Movie was sponsored by Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, The Queen's College, Oxford, the Social Science division at University of Oxford (and your jumble servitor, myself, 😉) Do comment, forward,... I hope you will find this useful and that it will open a new way of teaching (maybe more engaging and topical). https://lnkd.in/eh_9u_wX

I watched a really fascinating episode of Oshi no Ko, an anime that focuses on the darkness behind the film and idol industry. The author has clearly done their research on the finer details and it's been fascinating to see what can be a sad reality for many. The passion and talents of artists getting exploited in ventures that purely prioritize profits over the craft. The episode that caught my attention was an examination of how manga got adapted into a stageplay. It was brought up that there can be too many middlemen, outside sources, and factors that distort the original intent of the author into something they wouldn't approve of. The most fascinating, and in my opinion, the most difficult aspect is realizing the limitations of the original medium and the medium it's being adapted into. For example, manga and novels have the luxury of having more page space to develop characters and story arcs. But stageplays and films have limited time to condense complicated narratives into a cohesive, two-hour storyline. On the flipside, films and stages are visual mediums and "a picture can be worth a thousand words" and rely on the strength/interpretations of their actors to add more emotion. I even saw this when sharing screenplays with others. It was intriguing to see how people from different creative backgrounds approached their writing and what they focused on. Do you all have an opinion for what makes a multi-media adaption successful? I can only really think of a couple that have been, one being The Last of Us.

If you solve enough problems, you get your movie made. I love the final line of the movie The Martian: "You just begin. You do the math. You solve one problem... and you solve the next one... and then the next. And If you solve enough problems, you get to come home." Just begin and start solving the problems. This is the most important if you are a micro budget filmmaker, wanting to make their first feature film. Do some planning. Then begin. Start solving problems. If you solve enough problems. You'll make a movie.

I’ve been working on two films with a similar core human issue at their heart, alongside an over-arching question - what is it that causes someone to act consciously for the greater good (when they don’t have to)? The films are on #ImpactInvesting and #EconomicJustice. I’ve noticed something important about the moments of #awakening (heightened #awareness), experienced by those that do act as such. Moments brought about by personal or societal events (e.g. personal loss or near loss, 9/11, 2008 recession). Or (extraordinary) influence in upbringing, or quiet moments of observation where something became clear. I’ll be posting fragments from these films here on LinkedIn at some stage and exploring the importance of awareness in the changing of the way we act. It seems important. It is not of the mind. Posts will probably appear on my new Substack first - https://lnkd.in/gk5CpZ6r - a post appears there today entitled ‘The Girl In The Entrance Hall’ which is about so NOT about investment or economics!
