At Climate & Sustainability Leadership, Eyal Harel, Co-Founder and CEO of BlueGreen Water Technologies, presents a transformative solution to the climate crisis: using freshwater ecosystems as massive carbon sinks. In his talk, "Unlocking the Multi-Gigaton Potential of Fresh Water as a Carbon Sink," Harel explains how BlueGreen’s technology combats harmful algal blooms while simultaneously sequestering carbon. BlueGreen’s two-layer innovation involves treating toxic algae that devastate aquatic ecosystems and converting them into a carbon storage system. "When we remove these toxic algae, the carbon they have absorbed sinks to the bottom, locking it away for millennia," Harel explains. This approach not only cleans water but also traps carbon dioxide, providing a dual benefit. Harel emphasizes the potential to remove 5 to 15 billion tons of carbon annually by scaling these projects globally. BlueGreen’s Mantua Reservoir project in Utah removed 13,000 tons of carbon and reduced toxic algae by 99%, showcasing the impact of this method. With a business model financed by carbon credits, BlueGreen is expanding efforts worldwide, cleaning lakes and providing safe water at no cost to local communities.
