Today is International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. We are resharing recent news from Brazil that people from the Yanomami Indigenous Territory in Roraima have become the first to benefit from the country’s national rollout of G6PD testing and single-dose tafenoquine to tackle P. vivax malaria. Indigenous peoples are too often left behind in the rollout of new medicines, so this is a welcome change in approach to provide the treatment to the Yanomami people first. https://lnkd.in/gX6MegGt

Thrilled to share our new manuscript published on #BMC. To interrupt residual malaria transmission and achieve successful elimination of Plasmodium falciparum in low-transmission settings, WHO recommends administration of a single dose of 0.25 mg/kg (or 15 mg/kg for adults) primaquine (PQ) combined with artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT), without glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) testing. However, due to the risk of haemolysis in patients with G6PD deficiency (G6PDd), PQ use is uncommon. Thus, our study assessed the safety of a single low dose of PQ administered to patients with G6PD deficiency. As we approach World Malaria Day, let us take a moment to reflect on the impact that malaria has on individuals, families, and entire communities around the world. Malaria continues to be a major public health challenge, especially in countries with limited resources and weak healthcare systems. Despite progress made in recent years, there is still much work to be done in the fight against malaria. We must continue to invest in research and development of new tools, such as vaccines, diagnostics, and treatments, as well as in the strengthening of health systems and the delivery of effective interventions. Find out how Sysmex through its innovative rapid & accurate malaria diagnostic technology is contributing to achieving a malaria-free world. https://lnkd.in/gZjFB7C #WorldMalariaDay #EndMalaria #MalariaDiagnosis #ZeroMalaria

🎉 Good news alert! 🎉 “We have seen a reduction in under-five in-patient admissions […]. We are aware that we also have other malaria prevention interventions, and that they complement each other, but I believe the vaccine has contributed significantly to this reduction.” – @Dr Lumbani Munthali, National Malaria Control Manager, Ministry of Health Read the full story (link below)

Cameroon Launches World's First Routine Malaria Vaccine Program Groundbreaking development in public health - the initiation of the world's first routine malaria vaccine program in Cameroon. This historic step, involving the RTS,S vaccine, marks a significant stride towards combating one of Africa's most enduring health challenges. The vaccine, targeting infants up to six months old, demonstrates a promising leap forward in disease prevention. This achievement is more than a health milestone; it's a beacon of hope for a healthier, more prosperous Africa. Hopefully, this will lead to a significant decrease in malaria incidence and mortality, particularly among our most vulnerable populations. #MalariaVaccine #PublicHealth #SustainableDevelopment #HealthcareInnovation #AfricaRising

📌•What is Malaria? Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by various species of the parasitic protozoan microorganisms called Plasmodium. 📌•Causes of Malaria There are many factors that can cause malaria, such as Bitten by a malarial vector (Anopheles stephensi) Use of shared and infected syringes. Organ transplantation. Transfusion. From an infected mother to her baby during birth. 🔔•Symptoms of malaria Symptoms of malaria are exhibited within 7 to 18 days of being infected. Common symptoms include: Fever, fatigue, chills, vomiting, and headaches Diarrhoea, anaemia and muscle pain Profuse sweating and convulsions Bloody stools. In severe cases, malaria can be devastating; it can lead to seizures, coma and eventually, death. 🚫•Prevention of malaria: Malaria is one of the major causes of preventable death in the world today. It affects more than 500 million people worldwide and causes 1 to 2 million deaths every year. It is a tropical infectious disease and almost 90 per cent of the cases are from Sub-Saharan Africa. There are two ways to deal with malaria – prevent the mosquito bite from happening (i.e. preventative steps) or attack the parasites once they have infected the body. 👉🏻The first method advocates the use of mosquito nets and mosquito repellents such as 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐧 to prevent mosquitoes from biting. 👉🏻The second form of treatment uses a chemical called 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲 present in the bark of a cinchona tree. A form of drug chloroquine has proven very effective against malaria even though it is not a vaccine. #malaria #malariafree #malariaawareness #malariaprevention #MalariaElimination #pharmacy #clinicalpharmacist #doctors #healthcare #medicalstudent #fbpagepost #medicine #Quinine #premethrin

🎗️ Revolutionizing Malaria Treatment: Combination Therapy 🙌🏽 🗣️ We started a series that talked about the way not to go with Malaria treatment, today we will discuss how to treat malaria with the right approach. 🗣️Recap: Malaria is a serious disease caused by tiny parasites that are spread by mosquitoes. Mono-therapy drugs are medicines that have only one active ingredient to fight malaria. 🎯 Combination therapy drugs are like using multiple weapons to fight the malaria monsters. ✍️These drugs have multiple active ingredients that work together to: 💎 Kill the parasites. 💎 Prevent resistance. 💎 Ensure the disease is fully treated. ✍️ Why combination therapy works: 💎 Multiple targets: The parasites are attacked from multiple angles. 💎 Reduced resistance: The parasites are less likely to become resistant. 💎 Complete treatment: The disease is fully treated, reducing the risk of recurrence. 🧣Using mono-therapy malaria drugs is like fighting a strong enemy with only one weapon. Combination therapy drugs are like having a powerful team of heroes working together to defeat the malaria monsters! 🤝 Let us work together to eradicate wrong treatment. 🎉🎉 The video below highlights the molecules that are effective to treat Malaria optimally. #Malaria #LinkedInMasterClassWithBright #Stopmalaria #Eradicatewrongtreatment #Innovation

Today is historic as #Cameroon spearheads a new #WHO_approved malaria #vaccine in #Africa. The situation is dire, with 90% of global #malaria cases concentrated on the continent and an alarming 3.7 million reported cases only in #Ethiopia last year. I hope the battle to eradicate this deadly mosquito-borne parasitic disease brings relief to frightened mothers whose children have been taken from them across the continent. https://lnkd.in/dcKQfHy5
