Just three years ago, It often felt impossible to get the right people in higher ed to talk about the rapidly changing job market and how higher education needs to adapt. The urgency of this conversation was often overlooked, and taking action seemed even harder. Fast forward to this week, Martín Serrano and I hosted two webinars on this very topic, and we had people from 264 institutions across 48 countries registered! 🎉 Why the change? It’s tough to say exactly, but here are three factors which have certainly played a role: 🤖 Rise of AI: The advancements in AI have made the need to adapt more urgent. 👩💼 Employer Demands: The World Economic Forum reported that employers now value work experience and skills more than academic qualifications. 💻 New Educational Alternatives: The rise of alternative education providers has pressured traditional institutions to innovate and stay relevant. A heartfelt thank you to the people and institutions who saw the importance of this problem and took a chance on us even when we only had a PowerPoint Presentation with an idea of what this could be. Thanks to your support, this vision is now being shared with people around the world. It feels insane to be in a classroom following the same curriculum that has been taught over x number of years when every single student has chatGPT up on their screen (the “real” life job isn’t any different). Disruption in this space is a MUST.

2moI always appreciate your insights Esteban and the importance you place on the changing job market. You’re spot on about the rapid shift now despite longer trends leading here! I also wonder about the need for higher ed to adapt based on societal and environmental needs (not solely economic demand)- these are connected conversations but require prioritization so that inequities aren’t amplified. Grateful for your voice! And hope that we find ways to collaborate across sectors on this kind of work! (I miss working with you!) :)
