𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆, Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programs: This is the original skunk works, officially called Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programs (ADP). Founded in 1943 by Kelly Johnson, it's known for creating some of the most advanced aircraft designs, often under tight deadlines and with a high degree of secrecy. The name "skunk works" comes from a comic strip called "Li'l Abner" where a smelly secret place existed – a humorous reference to the often unconventional and fast-paced nature of their projects. 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆, Independent and Innovative Teams: The term "skunkworks" or "skunk works" is now widely used across various fields to describe 𝗮 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹, 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Week 1 of my NASA Space Grant project was very tedious. I booted and connected to my Raspberry Pi GoPiGo3, installed software, updated my configuration settings, and did a little 3D printing. I'll be programming an autonomous Mars Rover that collects environmental data, communicates that data with lasers, and does lidar terrain mapping. #NASA #NASASpaceGrant #RaspberryPi #GoPiGo #Robotics #Python

When I work with my team, I often see how long development cycles can increase risk. We sometimes don’t know if a feature will deliver the desired outcome until it’s too late. Committing to months of development can lead to wasted time and resources if the end result doesn’t hit the mark. That’s why I believe in delivering value incrementally. The question we should always ask ourselves is: What can we deliver in two weeks that brings real value? I recently watched Caleb Olson’s Poopcopter demo (https://lnkd.in/e7FTe3PS), and I loved it. Caleb built a drone that autonomously detects and collects dog poop in his garden. But what stood out to me even more was his development approach. Here's a rundown: Step 1: Detection Mechanism Caleb didn’t start with the drone. Instead, he began by training a model to detect when his dog pooped and marked the location on a map. This simple step had immediate value—Caleb no longer needs to monitor his dog. He knows where he poops and can go and collect. Also, if this had been a business, he could have started selling this feature alone validating the need, connecting with his customers, and paying for continued development. Step 2: Location Finder Next, he built a laser pointer system to show exactly where the poop was, eliminating the need to read the map. This made the system even more convenient and moved him closer to full automation. Step 3: Drone Integration Finally, Caleb added the drone to pick up the poop automatically. By the time he reached this step, he had already created value at each stage, proving the concept along the way. What I love about Caleb’s approach is that he ensured every step provided immediate value. It wasn’t about waiting for the entire system to be finished before it became useful. This is something I strive (not always successfully) to do with my team—break projects into smaller, meaningful increments that deliver value at every stage. By doing this, we reduce risk, get early feedback, and continue moving towards our larger goal without wasted effort.
