As Phoenix recently hit its 100th consecutive day of temperatures above 100°F, the extreme heat is causing serious health risks for children. Parents recall frightening moments of children passing out from heat-related illnesses. Asphalt-heavy schoolyards, with no shade or green spaces, are amplifying the problem. This highlights the urgent need for more trees in urban environments. Trees offer essential shade, lower temperatures, and protect children from dangerous heat, helping create safer outdoor spaces for everyone. We are happy to see states like California seeing the value in tree planting as one of the mitigating solutions and hope to see more cities and states follow the trend. https://lnkd.in/eGbAR9fJ #climatechange #heat #heatwave #education #health #children #naturebasedsolutions #trees #playground #classroom #cooling #naturebasedsolutions

Scores of US schoolyards like hers are carpeted in heat-absorbing asphalt, with no shade even for play areas. The buildings were often made with wall and roofing materials that radiated heat into indoor spaces. Kids are also more vulnerable to heat illness than adults. Their bodies have a harder time self-regulating in extreme heat in part because they sweat less, so they can become dehydrated faster. Climate change is heightening the risks. School closures related to heat are becoming more frequent, according to a report by the Center for Climate Integrity and the firm Resilient Analytics...BermudaReal.com

In light of the California heatwave crisis, as highlighted in this article, schools are grappling with overheating and air conditioning inefficiencies. Vulnerable populations, especially children, face increased health risks due to rising temperatures. MEER reflective sheets, designed for passive cooling, offer an affordable and sustainable solution that can mitigate heat stress in underserved areas and open spaces where school children gather in their spare time for recreation. Scientific studies confirm that passive cooling materials, like MEER sheets, can reflect up to 95% of sunlight, reducing indoor temperatures by up to 10°C without relying on electricity. For schools, this means cost-effective shedding solutions that lessen dependency on expensive air conditioning units, making it ideal for underfunded schools in heat-affected zones especially during field studies on campus. These sheets can be easily installed on roofs and open areas, providing immediate relief to students and staff alike. Furthermore, MEER sheets align with California’s drive for eco-friendly infrastructure, as they reduce the need for energy consumption and contribute to climate adaptation efforts in marginalized communities. For vulnerable populations, particularly in areas prone to extreme heat, MEER’s affordable cooling solutions present a scientifically-backed, scalable intervention that reduces the risk of heat-related health issues while promoting long-term sustainability. #Heatwaves #ClimateResilience #PassiveCooling #SustainableSolutions #HeatStress #UrbanHeatIsland #UHI #ClimateAdaptation #EcoFriendly #EnergyEfficiency #SustainableInfrastructure #HeatMitigation #PublicHealth #GreenTechnology #CoolingSolutions #EnvironmentalImpact #SchoolSafety #RenewableEnergy #ClimateAction

The Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) play a crucial role in exacerbating climate change impacts on human health. The SDOH are defined as the natural environment where individuals live, work, play and worship which significantly impact their health outcomes. For kids, a large portion of their day is spent in school and is therefore a critical environment at the center of climate change’s impact on #youth and their mental health. This is why cities like New York are expanding #green spaces in #schools to reduce heat islands and improve children’s mental health. In the 2021-22 school year, nearly 70% of public-school buildings had access to green spaces, and more than 1,200 schools reported having a garden. Last year the city broke ground on a 2.2-acre abandoned lot that has now turned into a communal garden and learning space for students. Heat in schools: this problem is arguably worse in “shoulder climates” like Flagstaff and the northern portions of the USA, compared with hot places like Phoenix, because we haven’t accomplished the necessary adaptations yet. It’s time for school leadership to adopt heat-wise policies, especially for young children and student athletes. #nauresearch #heat #health #schools

The Los Angeles Times editorial says: “Asphalt-dominated schoolyards are not only detrimental to learning, health and well-being, they’re inhumane.” California can ease the burden of extreme heat on kids and make our communities more climate-resilient by allocating $1 billion for green schoolyards—about 7% of the state’s #EdBond—this November. These investments will provide new trees, plants, and permeable surfaces to mitigate the effects of climate change, creating safe spaces for learning and play to improve test scores, boost health outcomes, and cool entire neighborhoods. https://lnkd.in/gDdxt_Rf

Breathe easy = learn easy? Research suggests that indoor air quality could have a major impact on a child’s education. In a collaborative project with Boston Public Schools, a Boston University environmental health researcher is studying ways to improve indoor air quality in classrooms. For example, carpets play a key role in indoor air quality. Using automated vacuum cleaners can be a cost-effective way for schools to keep dust and allergens out of the air.
