A good CISO doesn’t care about what you attended at ****-Con Recently at my local monthly security meetup (SecMidwest, Inc) we had a lively conversation about attending various ****-Con events. There were a number of viewpoints in the room with perspectives that ranged the valuation of participation from 0 to 10. Some of the participants in the conversation expressed that all of the talks at events did not always enhance or strengthen their learning or abilities, that it was difficult to return back to work and demonstrate in a “what I learned” talk or short email to their team. Here’s the thing, the value of these events, of these connections, is not just what happens in a thirty- or sixty-minute session. It’s truly what happens in the space between. My backstory, I attended the first three years of GrrCON. I got cocky, I didn’t come home feeling like I ‘learned’ much. I quit attending. But, I also attended sessions and went home, without engaging or connecting with others. Now, this is my third consecutive year being back at the event and I'll continue to prioritize participation. Now, it’s true, I don’t attend every single session slot. Instead, I spend time with peers, prospects, friends, colleagues in a corner of the exhibit hall or at an evening reception. I’ve attended these events solo at times, yet each year I connect. I hear what is on people's minds, the threats they face in the sector, the things that really truly ache them, what they look for in support via various channels, what we struggle with, and what is on the horizon. The past two years I’ve been adopted by a friend (Nick P.) and his extended team. Here's the thing we need to remember about learning, this coming from someone who spent fifteen years as an educator… Learning happens in all forms. It may happen in the classroom or lecture, but it also happens in an elevator ride, shared Uber/Lyft, doubling up on a Lime scooter at midnight, over a beverage, or in the hotel lobby. When it comes to your CISO, a good leader won’t ask what sessions you attended, but instead, if you’ve been recharged, expanded your network, and found something of value to bring back to your team. Please support your local ****-Con event. Be prepared to acquire new skills, ideas, or troubleshoot problems in any setting, informal or not. If you’re a leader, please remember, these events are an opportunity to connect, recharge, and grow ... sometimes that learning may not be evident at a cursory glance. ps.
