Opioids, which include pain relievers such as morphine, are recognised by WHO as an essential medicine. They can alleviate a substantial proportion of what the Lancet Commission on palliative care and pain relief called serious health-related suffering. In 2016, about 25·7 million people died in need of palliative care due to serious health-related suffering of whom about 80% lived in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) with limited access to pain management care. By 2060, it is estimated that 48 million people will die needing palliative care, 83% of whom will reside in LMICs. This projection represents an 87% increase relative to 2016. [HGPI Policy Column] (No.42) – From the Chronic Pain Project Team – Policies for Chronic Pain by The Scottish Government The Chronic Pain Project published its HGPI Policy Column No.42 that compile the framework for pain management delivery and other chronic pain related policies by the Scottish Government and implications for the chronic pain policy in Japan. ＜POINTS＞ - In Scotland in 2021, the Scottish Government committed to working with local, regional and national stakeholders, including patient groups to develop a national approach to service delivery for chronic pain acknowledging the high prevalence of chronic pain and its impact and the importance of prioritising policy development. - A large number of people with lived experience participated in Scotland’s National Advisory Committee for Chronic Pain within the government to discuss policies aligned with the needs of people living with pain. - Surveys, the activities of the third sector, and the active engagement of patients and health care professionals in meetings illuminated the diverse needs of individuals from various backgrounds, integrating them into the policymaking process. - Policy discussions encompassed a spectrum of pain causes, addressing both complex pain and less complex pain, which often presents alongside one of more other long-term conditions. >> For more reading https://lnkd.in/gMC3iRwm #HGPIPolicyColumn #NCDs #ChronicPain #health #healthcare #hgpi #japan Takahiro Sakauchi Yuri Isoda
