Advanced HDR by Technicolor breaks Brazil, waiting game for TV 3.0 Our standalone analysis of the state of UHD broadcasting across DTH and OTT in France during the 2024 Olympics showed that the CTA’s HDR10 and Dolby Laboratories Vision are the two dominant High Dynamic Range formats among the main French channels. Outside of France, however, Advanced HDR by Technicolor is making its own case as the HDR underdog. This feat came in Brazil, where Brazilian broadcaster Globo and German R&D institution Fraunhofer IIS have successfully demonstrated Advanced HDR by Technicolor Group and MPEG-H Audio on Hisense Group TVs. Are we finally ready to say goodbye to SD? Radiotelevisión Española is closing down its #SD channels as of this week and going fully #HD. "La 1, La 2, 24 Horas, Clan and Teledeporte will continue to be broadcast in high definition on DTT when RTVE closes its standard definition channels on Tuesday. The public broadcaster, in line with the commercial users of the DTT platform, is in the process of migrating its services from standard to high definition." My interest was first drawn to this when it was reported on over a year ago. Unlike other countries, namely the UK, RTVE is backed by the Spanish government, so they've been running a campaign to raise awareness of the transition amongst the public to be ready for the switch. In the UK, it's been left to the BBC to announce the change, without government support. So, RTVE will no longer have SD channels terrestrial channels. So, it's likely that the Spanish channels, commercial and otherwise, will follow in the same vein and phase out SD. How quickly that happens is yet to be seen, but it's a big statement, especially with the support of the government. As I've commented before, SD has been remarkably resilient, considering HD has been out for years, regular broadcasts started in 2004 on DTH. And yet, fast-forward to 2024 there are still many SD channels. One question is whether SD will fade out, and another is whether as the article states; "the freed capacity will now enable the launch of ultra high definition services." Will that be the case? France to immortalize DTT in UHD, buoyed by low-power TV data The Low Carbon TV (LoCaT) project set benchmarks in early 2022 with research claiming perhaps unsurprisingly that DTT is a significantly less power-hungry content delivery mechanism than OTT video and IPTV networks. Faultline had expected broadcasters to use this data as a sustainability stick with which to beat IP video competitors and the telcos nibbling at spectrum, yet two years whizzed by with relative silence on LoCaT – until this week when an ambitious UHD roll-out plan was declared by France Télévisions. The 2024 Paris Olympics is the pièce de resistance for the broadcaster’s free-to-air (FTA) UHD plans, but the forthcoming Summer Olympics Games are not where the UHD buck starts, or finishes. #tv #broadcasting
