Getting the shot… Having had the pleasure of directing a few photoshoots over this last year, I thought I’d share some of my learnings from our most recent one, which involved capturing both motion and stills against a green screen. Before the shoot 📅 Spend way more time planning than you think you need. Location. Studio space. Ease of access. Talent. Props. Crew. Technical equipment. Shots. Extra shots. Backup shots. Placements and variations. 📷 List the shots you need, and show examples (AI, scamps, test shots) ✅ Have a checklist for every shot – what mood are you capturing, what’s the angle, what absolutely must be included, what not to show, what are the variations? 👗 Get the wardrobe and styling sorted early on, but source this as late as possible to allow for any changes (especially where custom branding is concerned). Best to shop locally - online deliveries are rarely reliable when you need them to be! 🗜️ What equipment do you need to get the shot? Not just your cameras, lights and tripods, but is there any ‘magic’ required to achieve the footage? I had to build a device which spins a ball over a green screen so that the footage could be comped into another, separate sequence. 📍 Use local suppliers for sourcing kit, props and custom items. Dealing in person is so much easier than over the phone. Plus you can get there if you need to pick up late! 💭 Think of every possible eventuality – what could go wrong? Have a backup plan. 🖋️ Make sure all your stakeholders have approved the plan. During the shoot ⏰ Get there early 🛠️ Set-up always takes longer than you think. If possible set up the lighting and set the day before. Test it works. 📇 Ensure everyone knows where to be and when and you have everyone’s numbers handy ⚠️ Have a back-up plan for crew and talent should there be a no show 🪪 Make sure everyone has a role on the day – whether that’s reviewing shots, adjusting wardrobe, covering up flaws or logos, moving lighting, backing up shots, or getting the lunch (very important) 📋 Keep an eye on your timings. 📸 Prioritise the priority shots. 🤳 Double check your shots as you go, then tick them off. 📋 Stick to the plan. ↔️ Plans change. So be prepared to think on your feet. 😜 Remember to have fun – how many people get to do this for a living? In summary, shoots are exhausting, and can be really stressful. But you won’t remember the pain of the day when you have the final cuts in the bag ready to go out into the world!

I help brands - and personal brands - cut through the noise | Award-Winning Art Director | Tedx Speaker | Cannes Future Lions Judge
How to get an in-house creative job at brands like Gymshark and Lounge 💡 I was 28 when I applied for a creative job at Gymshark. Before that, I had spent 7 years bouncing between jobs in Birmingham and London. - Telesales - Photography assistant - Handbag shop - Hotel bar - Receptionist - Junior graphic designer at a chicken factory - Junior artworker at a small advertising agency - Freelance artworker - Photographer's agent In that time, I applied for hundreds of roles at all kinds of dream companies. I got ghosted most of the time. And I had a lot of rejections. But eventually, the stars aligned. I found the creative job ad for Gymshark, put a bespoke portfolio together, studied their brand values, spoke passionately about the role, got the job. The rest is history. I suppose it was less of a 'career ladder' and more of a rollercoaster. I had no idea how it was going to end up. But I knew one thing: I knew I loved being creative. I think that's the key. When you find something you are really passionate about, you can focus entirely on doing that, rather than specific brands or job titles. I think it's your passion that guides you. And as a result, I think your attitude is infectious. People really like that. Brands really like that. So my advice is, focus a little less on the brand itself and really invest in you and what you enjoy doing. If you can do that, and get really good at it, you'll probably find that brands will start to approach you. #creativity #careeradvice

Getting the perfect images for your brand isn't about popping onto the latest online Ai platform with some hopeful prompts. It requires time, effort, flexibility and skill. We recently undertook a brand shoot for a food client. One set of crafted shots to be used across all media on and offline. Here‘s a hint of what went into it... 1 model 1 art director 1 photographer 1 food stylist 1 hair & makeup artist 2 assistants ...and at least one pair of tweezers! And that‘s just on shoot day! Never mind all of the planning, wardrobe selection, shot list creation... NB. This is not one of the final images, just a behind the scenes pic from an iPhone. Useful for general first stage approvals for the remote client, but not for A1 sized posters whatever Apple say!

Last year I rebranded to focus on the photography work that is most authentic to me—health and wellness (AKA fitness, sports, active lifestyle). When I made this change it rendered all of the directing projects I’d done in the past as useless and wiped out my entire motion section on my portfolio. Clients won’t hire you for something they aren’t 100% sure you can do, so I knew what I had to show them I’m capable before I can get the work. Rebuild and start from scratch. We creatives are faced with this reality more often than you’d think. The daunting task of restarting, reworking, and renovating our work. It can be a daunting task because there are often many moving parts and massive expenses involved. Building a new portfolio or motion reel without client money is not easy. You take on the role of producer, location scout, casting director, creative director, and photographer/director. You build teams and convince them to get on board with your specific vision. You spend weeks and months nailing in timing that works for everyone and trying to lock in talent that won’t get booked from under you (since you’re generally paying discounted or trade rates). You’re relying on relationships you’ve spent time building and you’re making sure anything you do is worth their time. The work that photographers, directors, cinematographers, talent, wardrobe stylists, and makeup artists put into their work just in *hopes* of landing a paid job is truly something to revere. This is why I’m proud to be a part of this industry, and this is why the creative community is fighting like hell to keep the jobs that we’ve worked so hard to build. Here’s some bts from my recent motion production I pulled off with an INSANE team to build out my new/improved directors reel (coming soon..). 🫶🏻🫶🏻
