Today is International Hug Your Creative Director Day! (or at least it should be) Creative Directors are the unsung heroes of marketing. If I were marketing hire #1, the very next hire I'd make would be for a seasoned Creative Director. And I wouldn't skimp on the salary or use contract resources. The best Creative Directors not only have great technical skills, they are able to walk a fine line between delivering what stakeholders THINK they want vs. what they actually need. No small feat. They are Defenders of the Brand. They are Magistrates of the Due Date. Ruler of Drafts and Final Versions. It is one of the few roles I would suggest overpaying - and poaching - to get. Every dollar spent on a great Creative Director will save you time and money wasted on endless rounds of revisions and operational gridlock.

I can't emphasize this enough, if you're new or a young professional getting into the creative industry, work in agencies or small businesses for as long as possible. The years of experience are simply worth more, which is why big corporations routinely steal creatives out of the agency space to bring them in-house. Why is that? Sitting in multiple job seats, working with clients across different industries and sizes, non-linear career growth, and navigating the highs and lows of the service industry—you're earning every single buck coming your way. Fortune 500 hiring managers are going to hedge their bets on the creative who has successfully built, grown and managed 10+ brands a year in a variety of industries and problems, versus someone who has worked on a single brand per year. Agency and small business-honed creatives are battle-tested and more likely to be future-proofed. I want all of my creative peers to get paid one day, but too many of you are searching for a cushy job too early. Your dream creative director/strategy director/brand director/CMO job is coming. Get there 10 years earlier because you invested in experience now.

🚩Remember: A Creative Director is hired to DIRECT the creative. The title is the job description. If you’re being thrown “idunnos”w/ no compass that’s called a vague director. And the only traction you’ll get is spinning wheels.

With over 10 years of experience in the creative direction industry, I’ve often found it surprising when individuals with little or no creative background offer suggestions like, “I think we should try this,” "Use this color instead,” or simply, “I don’t like it.” While feedback is always valuable, the whole purpose of hiring a creative professional is to benefit from their expertise. We don’t just “make things look pretty”; we apply principles of design, creativity, and strategy to craft visuals that effectively communicate a brand’s message and resonate with its audience. If someone had a deep understanding of Creative direction, they wouldn’t need to hire a professional in the first place. It’s essential to trust the process and believe in the creative director's ability to make a brand stand out. We aren’t just executors—we’re creative thinkers who bring a brand to life. Creativity isn’t about individual preferences; it’s about clear communication, staying on trend, and brand's identity. The best results come when brands trust us to professionally and thoughtfully transform their ideas into something impactful and meaningful. #fashionbrands #creativedirectors #trusttheemployee

When did Producer roles turn into being a one-person production team? They want you to be marketing extraordinaire editor videographer graphic designer strategist social media manager analyst sound designer …and more For a salary between $55k-$85k? That’s 8+ roles in one! It’s laughable and downright ridiculous. Companies expecting one person to fulfill all those roles just shows potential employees that they want one person to do all the work it takes a team to accomplish without the respect of paying appropriately. At the end of the day it says “we’d rather find the person who’s willing to do all of these roles in one so we can keep business costs low and get away with not hiring a team.” Companies - can you stop doing this in 2024 and beyond? #jobsearch #jobseekers #dontbefooled #videoproduction #video

If you're not willing to give actionable direction to creatives, you are not a creative director. It's not a title. It's a job. And it pays more because it's worth more. It's harder. And it's not for everyone. #theadvertisingsurvivalguide
