For all the wine lovers out there 🍷 🍇 To plough or not to plough... 🚜 There are many reasons why this is absolutely NOT the way to a healthy vineyard - just think of the beneficial microbiology in the soil and the mycorrhizal fungal networks that help the vines to access nutrients. Ploughing each year will just tear this apart 💔 I'm sure there are reasons why you'd want to plough; it could help to plant and establish healthy cover crops and help to break up compacted soil, aerating the soil and incorporate compost. But almost all of this can also be achieved by having a healthy soil microbiome - but that's of course where we have to start: restoring soil health. That is the key to ensuring we don't need to intervene too much. And healthy soils will lead to healthy and happy vines, which lead to great grapes that we can produce amazing wine with... It's all linked! We are so excited to share this technological innovation in sustainable grape growing that will change the game for winemakers worldwide. We have partnered with Clean Works Inc. of St. Catharine’s Ontario, to develop machinery (with help from Lakeview Vineyard Equipment) that is fitted to a Grape Harvester that protects grapevines from mildew and other pathogens without the use of synthetic chemical pesticides. Cleanworks patented, and already proven treatment process, utilizes a combination of ultraviolet light to activate ozone and hydrogen peroxide mist into highly reactive Hydroxyl Radicals that attack and kill powdery mildew and other pathogens on contact, which are significant threats to grapevines. As stated by Winemaker Brian Schmidt, “This breakthrough will greatly reduce the need for synthetic fungicide sprays, which are very costly for the grower and not as effective. There is no chemical residue in our process—the only by-products are oxygen and water.” “It’s a quantum leap forward in sustainable grape and wine production that will provide cost savings and environmental benefits to wine regions all over the world,” says Allan Schmidt, President of Vineland Estates. This project has been in the works for the past two years, and we couldn’t be more ecstatic to finally be presenting this made-in-Niagara technology that is the greatest advancement in natural sustainable food preservation in over 150 years. This recipe is a creamy, delicious, and nutritious hummus substitute for avocado-based guacamole. You may have already heard the news – chefs around the world are ditching this unsustainable fruit! But why? For starters, avocados have a large carbon footprint compared to other produce and can require up to 320 liters of water to grow (versus just 5 liters per tomato!), making them unaffordable for the local communities where they are grown. In fact, they have become a global commodity, with rising demand resulting in deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and water shortages affecting several indigenous populations around the world. Zucchinis, on the other hand, have a lower carbon footprint producing less CO2 emissions compared to other fruits and vegetables, including avocados. This makes their production, which includes not only farming but also packaging, transportation, and storage, relatively sustainable without significant damage to the environment (air, water, land, soil, and so on). Couple them with some fresh cilantro or parsley and you have a vibrant green dip, similar to guacamole but with a smaller environmental impact. Read more in our blog post. From SOIL to Bottle: The Journey of Wine Making Let's speak the truth and bring transparency forward. The journey of winemaking begins at the very foundation: THE SOIL. The quality and characteristics of the soil are crucial in determining the health of the vines and the quality of the grapes produced. As of 2023, the estimated total vineyard surface area worldwide is approximately 7.2 million hectares, highlighting the vast expanse dedicated to this ancient art. Imagine the positive impact if these 7.2 million hectares worldwide embraced sustainable practices. We could reverse significant environmental damage and create a healthier planet. The use of animal manure filled with antibiotics and hormones, fish fertilizers, pesticides, and other harsh chemicals is detrimental to our environment. These practices degrade soil quality and contribute to climate change. Contrary to popular belief, animal manure is not beneficial for our soil; it is a byproduct of the animal agriculture industry designed to profit from slaughtered animals. These substances do not belong in our soils, and certainly not in our bodies. This is why I, Frances Gonzalez, founder of Vegan Wines, am passionate about raising awareness. Vegan Wines is about so much more than just enjoying a glass of wine. It's about making a worldwide impact and driving change for a better tomorrow. Wine is food, and food is wine.
