To all my friends in the IT sector, I have a question to ask... What happens to all the e-waste, such as laptops, computers, monitors, displays, and phones, once they have reached their end of life or are upgraded? I ask because when the students at my university and I went on outreach programs to government schools, NGOs, and orphanages that housed children as a part of service learning projects earlier this year, one of the first things that stood out was the need for digital facilities. While most of our ideas revolved around improving digital literacy (even teaching coding), the lack of digital facilities rendered it unfeasible. Suppose we can somehow repurpose and reuse older systems (and overcome security issues) for children's education. I believe we can aid the children immensely by equipping them for an increasingly technology-oriented future. Ok, I need to have a bit of a rant... Cambridge is a city of innovation and world-class technology companies, as we proudly see this week during Cambridge Tech Week. But behind the tech success stories, a very different reality exists. On the same day as we celebrate our city’s achievements, our Charity received an email from a Council officer. Two secondary school children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) need laptops to support their education - with enough capacity for Assistive Tech programs. Both children come from lower-income families, and neither have Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs) in place (why??). We're told their schools can’t afford to provide them with the devices they desperately need for their education. This is the other side of Cambridge—the digital divide that affects too many people. How do we reconcile these two realities? As we celebrate tech innovation, we must also address the needs of our community.
