At a UK GenAI roundtable this week we were discussing how to track and exploit constant reductions in time & cost of ideation/content creation/decision making, while simultaneously releasing creative capacity to take on higher value revenue generation tasks. Phew! And how to reconcile these new realities (weeks->hours) with traditional assumptions on budgets, investment and growth. We ran out of time just as we started to dig into the challenge of constantly recalibrating our assumptions and measurements as various combinations of GenAI capabilities (including agents & simulators) open up the aperture of opportunity/risk (delete depending on mindset). Turns out we need a deeper workshop...

He also touched upon the growing algorithm market and emphasized the crucial role of prompting in AI development. Had a fantastic time at SaaStr last week! Despite the event being smaller than last year, I had the unique opportunity to connect with numerous CEOs and founders, gaining valuable insights. One key takeaway many spoke about was the struggle many technology companies face in integrating AI into their products seamlessly. A perceptive leader highlighted a crucial point - many companies are grappling with AI because it's not inherent in their DNA. Merely "bolting on" AI to existing processes is not the solution; adaptation is key for long-term success. The evolving landscape will separate the innovative firms from the stagnant ones. Aya is a new AI model that can follow instructions in 101 languages, over 50% of which are lower-resourced languages that typically have less available training data. Aya outperforms prior multilingual models such as mT0 and BLOOMZ on most tasks while covering twice as many languages. The researchers (over 3,000 independent researchers across 119 countries) created extensive new benchmark tests to evaluate multilingual AI models' abilities across 99 languages, testing a wider range of skills such as reasoning, generation, human evaluation, and simulated task performance. They also carefully investigated optimal training data composition, data filtering, and model toxicity/biases. Overall, this work pushes the boundaries of multilingual AI, enabling broader access to powerful models instead of just focusing on data-rich languages. It also establishes more rigorous multilingual testing. The model and datasets are openly shared to advance research. As an enterprise leveraging AI, this research highlights the importance of focusing not just on major languages, but also enabling AI systems to support a diverse range of languages in order to make technology accessible to more people and communities globally. As, AI becomes more prevalent and embedded in society there will be a moral need (and a business opportunity) to expand AI accessibility beyond "first-class" languages. Enterprise will need to ensure AI systems are serving all users appropriately without unintended biases. Overall this work reminds us that multilinguality should be a priority for responsible and inclusive AI development, not an afterthought.
