Tuesday Tip: Are You Misusing Your Timebank? A friend from Minnesota told me about a recent Freakonomics episode where one guest expressed a concern in a scenario where a timebanking roofer takes longer than estimated to complete a roofing job. First, roofing is a skilled trade. At BACE Timebank we don't encourage timebankers to give up their income-generating skills in exchange for time currency. Instead, we encourage timebankers to timebank everyday skills. I would drive someone to the airport or doctor, but I won't timebank my professional statistical skills because that is a source of income. Secondly, if a timebanker underestimates work time, then the resolution is no different than if money were to be exchanged for the service. The timebanker communicates that the job is going to take more time, gets approval from the customer to continue, and receives quoted hours plus additional hours. Because timebanks generally allow negative time balances, there is no reasonable justification for a customer to refuse to pay additional hours. Timebanking is a complementary currency and a social tool. Timebanking has five underlying principles: everyone is an asset to their community, work redefined, reciprocity, social networking, and respect for the individual.
