Regular inspections of playground equipment, safety surfacing, and shade structures can help keep children safe at play. Since many commercial playgrounds haven't been in use over winter break, now is the perfect time to make sure they're safe for play. https://lnkd.in/g5Ed3iWK

🌿 Join the Movement to Make Flintshire Coastal Path Accessible for All! 🌿 TCC's campaign to remove barriers along the Flintshire Coastal Path continues apace. The current barriers are greatly limiting access for disabled people, mobility scooters, larger cycles, double prams, and other users. 🚶♀️🚴♂️👩🦽 Why This Matters: - Inclusivity: Everyone deserves to experience the natural beauty of our coastal path. - Community: Removing barriers fosters a more connected and supportive community. - Health: Encouraging outdoor activities promotes physical and mental well-being. How You Can Help: 1. Spread the Word: Share this post and raise awareness. 2. Get Involved: Join our upcoming events and volunteer opportunities. 3. Donate: Support the campaign financially to help us achieve our goal. Together, we can make the Flintshire Coastal Path accessible for everyone! 🌟 #TCC #FlintshireCoastalPath #AccessibilityForAll #CommunitySupport #inclusiveoutdoors FDF Cycling UK Transport for All Disabled Ramblers UK Cycling UK Sustrans Cymru https://lnkd.in/ezDNmHGm

This kind of circularity should be obvious.
If you work or live by a University, you know how Move Out can kind of break your heart. But this year we did things differently… With the help of a great team of students and campus + community volunteers, this is ALL THE STUFF we saved from landfill at Illinois State University Move Out this year! Everything will be stored, sorted, and cleaned over the summer - then will be given back to incoming students for free during Summer Preview & at our big Front Yard Free Cycle this fall. This was one heavy lift: months of planning, then 10 straight days of collecting, transporting, and unloading moving trucks. (and of course some dumpster diving) We are exhausted, sore, and a little bruised up…but we did it! *Not seen: 600+ mattress toppers delivered to Kern Mattress for recycling into upholstery filler, hundreds of pounds of food delivered to the School Street Food Pantry, numerous tarps & sleeping bags dropped off at Home Sweet Home Mission homeless shelter, and about 20 pairs of crutches given to LIFE CIL.

Another great example of how vertical deflection can be used on arterials! Bainbridge Island has joined the ranks of Cincinnati, Honolulu, Philly, and others, who are all piloting using raised crossings, speed tables, and speed cushions with great success in slowing speeds and reducing crashes on arterial streets! https://lnkd.in/gyXqXyED
Who says you can’t traffic calm an arterial? We (Toole Design Group) designed these raised crosswalks as part of the Madison Ave project for the City of Bainbridge Island. Madison Ave is a Minor Arterial, one of the main north-south routes through town. The raised crosswalks will prioritize pedestrians along and across Madison and improve safety for all while having minimal impact to buses and emergency services. The project also includes protected and intermediate-level bike lanes connecting schools, parks, churches, and homes to downtown Winslow. Shoutout to Jakob Ward, PE from our office for leading this design! Learn more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/dvpcE3QN

Design Lessons from Cambodia: What NOT to Do! While building homes in Cambodia for a charity event, I stumbled upon a major design lesson! Imagine opening your window to find...another window, an air conditioning unit, and exposed electrical cables. 😱 The takeaway? Always consider your surroundings when designing a property. Don’t end up with a view like this! What do you think—worst view ever? Drop your thoughts below!

We are hosting a Mheitheal in County Cork next week. Internal repairs to random rubble walls. Dubbing out. Base and scratch coat renders and plasters. Consolidating reveals. The Vacant and Derelict homes grant scheme is by far the best initiative by Government to address the housing crisis and rejuvenation of our rural areas. 2024 for many of us practitioners has been the year of panicked grantees, desperate for hands to help. Us practitioners, up to our eyes with work, and stretched by poor weather and a lack of hands when things get tough. We feel like we are letting grantees down by just not being available, geographically, time wise or too small a team to make an impact. If we can't pull together once in a while the level of un-claimed funds will see this funding stream fail or neglect to amend criteria in favour of the people and heritage it can help. That's why we are issuing a call out to any masons, plasterers and tradespeople in the Cork or surrounding counties. A fantastic, hardworking and skilled couple are really up against the clock. With a young family to rear and a two storey farmhouse to renovate from derelict 2024 has been arduous. So far we have a team of four committed to step in and help. If you feel like you could be of help, may learn a little about vernacular repair or see the power of giving back after a very busy year then we would love to hear from you and explain in more detail and discuss your costs. Our forefathers knew this style of life, relied on it, learnt from it and lived in communities built on it. The Meitheal never died, we just struggled on and lost the natural act of asking for help. Leaning on this tradition next week may just be a warm and productive act. #community #helpinghands #builtheritage #traditionalskills #tradition #help

EYFS practice in hot weather - phew – hot, hot, hot! In this video, I hope to give you at least one idea to help with this or the next heatwave. Apologies for my sketches – which I did in the wrong size for the video – but it was just too hot to go back and do them again! The message here is to plan and then review what you provide. I have suggested that this opportunity be used for your early years team to sit back and watch the children—how they learn, whom they interact with, and what they are achieving… giving themselves permission to observe and to stay less stressed and cooler by doing so. I am suggesting that your day nursery or preschool future proofs your EYFS provision by adding resources through careful selection. More money can be spent on lots of cheap resources that don’t work! Visiting charity shops and car boot sales for smaller items (especially when there isn’t a heatwave) for items that will extend children’s opportunities, make life more comfortable or easier for next time could be a good idea, all ready for hot spells to come! 👉🏼 What works well for you? Can you suggest more ideas? https://lnkd.in/egczujUk

A worrying trend with the increasing risk of asbestos exposure due to the state of schools buildings. Actually you could include the majority of government buildings which have lacked investment over decades to properly maintain them. #healthandsafety #asbestos #schools #education #riskmanagement #disease #raac Nicola Dawn

Be the Light unto the Path of those left behind (or beside you). This is about taking a chance to see a vision come to fruition. Let us learn truth from our experience, build support for our dreams, snd structure our goals that pave a better path for the future snd the present. Building dreams one brick at a time.
