When I am asked, "how did you get started in the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) field?" 😂 In reality... There are 3 steps anyone can take to help them break into the industry. 1. Pursue a degree or certification 📜 Try to obtain a minimum of a certification related to focus on environmental or safety knowledge. Examples: OSHA 10, OSHA 30, HAZWOPER 40. With a degree try to obtain an associate's degree in safety or environmental. Some examples are Environmental Technology, Environmental Studies, Occupational Health and Safety. 2. Work part-time as a Hazardous Materials Technician ☣ 👨🔬 Many EHS fields value knowledge of hazardous waste management. An easy way to gain experience is to work with local job agencies for weekend work on local community household hazardous waste collection sites. 3. Network🤝 Very important step is to reach out to colleagues, friends, and family to let them know you are trying to enter into the EHS industry. This step helped me secure two roles as an EHS professional as some of my colleagues companies were hiring for EHS roles and I was able to get a recommendation from my colleagues. That is an effective 3 steps to help you secure your a job or to pass information along to anyone wondering how to break into the industry. #EHS #HAZMAT #NETWORK #OSHA30 #Safety #Environment

Better safe than sorry! 👷♂️ We often overlook the importance of safety in the workplace. For recruiters, especially in skilled trades, inquiring about Health & Safety (H&S) training is as crucial as assessing a candidate's technical skills. Prioritizing safety ensures a secure and productive work environment. 🚧 #healthandsafety #Preventativemaintenance #PM #millwright #maintenancesupervisor #maintenancemanager #electrician #maintenancetechnician #industrialmillwright #hiring #skilledtradesontario #skilledtrades #drakeinternational

🌟 Understanding the Unique Roles in Occupational Safety and Health: Engineer vs. Technician 🌟 In the ever-evolving world of Occupational Safety and Health, each role is crucial in fostering a safe work environment. However, the responsibilities of a Safety and Health Engineer and a Safety Technician differ in focus, depth, and impact. Let’s dive into these distinctions to appreciate how each professional contributes to safety compliance and innovation! 🦺🚧 Safety and Health Engineer: The Strategist and Innovator 🧠💡 A Safety and Health Engineer is a strategic thinker and problem-solver. According to OSHA and leading safety experts, this role focuses on designing, implementing, and optimizing safety programs that prevent hazards and promote a proactive safety culture. Here’s what engineers typically do: Risk Analysis & Assessment: Engineers conduct in-depth risk assessments to identify hazards, analyze root causes, and implement long-term solutions. Program Development: They create and implement safety protocols that comply with OSHA standards, ensuring sustainable safety improvements. System Integration: Engineers work across departments, integrating safety measures with operational processes, often using engineering controls to eliminate hazards at the source. Innovation & Research: Leveraging their technical expertise, they explore new technologies, like IoT sensors and AI analytics, to anticipate and mitigate risks more effectively. Safety Technician: The Frontline Enforcer and Supporter 🛠️👷♂️ On the other hand, Safety Technicians are hands-on practitioners who ensure compliance with established safety protocols on a daily basis. Their role is critical in maintaining the standards set by engineers and regulatory bodies, including OSHA and NABOSH. Key responsibilities include: Inspection & Monitoring: Technicians conduct routine inspections, identifying potential hazards and reporting safety violations. Emergency Response: They are often the first responders to incidents, trained to manage emergencies and administer first aid. Training & Awareness: Technicians play a pivotal role in educating employees on safety protocols, ensuring everyone is well-versed in best practices. Maintenance & Reporting: They maintain safety equipment and PPE, keeping records that help engineers improve safety programs and track incident trends. 🌐 In Conclusion: Both roles are indispensable, yet distinct. Engineers design the framework and implement innovations that elevate safety standards, while Technicians execute and enforce these standards, making safety an integral part of the daily . #SafetyCulture #OccupationalSafety #EmployeeWellbeing #ContinuousImprovement #SafetyFirst #Compliance #SustainableWorkplace #Resilience #LinkedInSafety #ElectricalSafety #OSHA #IOSH #ISO14001 #WorkplaceSafety #SustainableSafety #EnvironmentalHealth #SafetyFirst #SustainableWorkplace #GreenSafety #EnvironmentalSafety #ZeroHarm #ContinuousImprovement #HSE

It's #SafeWorkMonth so we decided to Take 5 with some of our safety team. First up, meet Jim Kent, Senior HSE advisor at our Port Melbourne site. What got you started in safety? A desire to progress from being a tradesman to a more responsible and senior position subsequently as a State Government Factories & Shops Inspector with what was at that time the Department of Labour. In those early regulatory day’s the focus was strongly upon machinery and plant operation and inspectors from that era were drawn from the electrical or mechanical pool – I was a fitter & machinist working in the munitions sector within in the Commonwealth. As health and safety grew to the clear priority that it holds today, so did I. I’m a zealot, but in a nice way! What do love most about your job? Solving real life work related problems that add to the working life of the many that benefit from my active involvement and engagement. I believe that I can make a worthwhile difference and while some people sometimes need convincing in the oval scheme of things if it’s got to be done – then it’s got to be done safely! What skills do you believe are essential for success in safety? Its very wide field of endeavor so some technical understanding is always useful as is perseverance and the maintenance and commitment to realistic and proper work standards otherwise you get worn down by well-meaning colleagues that don’t have the perspective of an HSE Professional. What role do collaboration and teamwork play in your daily work routine? These attributes are at the top of the list because HSE officers are nearly almost totally dependent upon the efforts and resources of others. The effective HSE Professionals are skilled at bringing their constituents along with them on the journey towards durable and lasting improvements at work. What’s your favourite way to recharge over the weekend? Family & food usually taken together and certainly focused around Imogen & Angus my two much loved grandchildren that I unashamedly spoil rotten at every opportunity. Don’t mind the F1 racing calendar and the occasional high end drag racing events for a good day out – much to my wife Margarete’s chagrin.
