#TechnicalThursday Earlier this week, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland published its greenhouse gas emissions projections for Ireland between 2023-2050. The report said that we are forecast to only achieve a reduction of up to 29% in total greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 which is well short of our target of 51%. The 29% reduction can only be achieved if plans across all sectors, as outlined in the 2024 Climate Action Plan, are fully implemented. This highlights the importance of the work we are all doing in the construction sector to promote new renewable technologies and improve energy efficiency and decarbonisation to try to achieve our collective emission reduction goals. This 𝗜𝗚 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝘂𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲 discusses an impact assessment of the EU’s 2040 Climate Target that was published on 6th February 2024, communicating the chosen scenario of 90-95% emissions reduction. The 88% reduction under current policies serves as the baseline. While specific EU-ETS targets weren't mentioned, the significance of Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) was highlighted. Success of European Commission’s Environmental Implementation Review relies heavily on the robustness of national energy and climate plans, to be submitted by June 2024. Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden did not respond immediately to the European Climate Neutrality Network report, and these countries’ draft plans show significant planning issues in sectors crucial for the energy transition. The assessment got leaked two weeks ahead, giving time for the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change to stress the need for more collective efforts, given increasingly costly extreme weather. To meet the ultimate net-zero emissions target, the EU needs approximately €1.5 trillion per year. According to the Board, focus would need to be redirected from polluting activities, such as combustion engine cars, fossil fuel production and new airports, to areas like public transport, building renovations, and evidently renewable energy. #IfchorGalbraiths #CarbonNeutral #MaritimeIndustry #NetZero #OceanFreight #ShippingIndustry #SustainableShipping ClearBlue Markets
