🏘️ Thurston County Residents, Let’s Help Shape Housing Policy in Our Communities 📜 The City of Olympia, City of Tumwater, City of Yelm, Washington, and City of Lacey are coming together to address local policies and regulations that may have resulted in racially disparate impacts, displacement, and exclusion in housing. To ensure this work reflects the real challenges and needs of the community, they’ve partnered with Uncommon Bridges to facilitate this critical study. No one understands the challenges of housing affordability better than those who experience them daily. That’s why they’re inviting our community and our residents/neighbors to share our personal stories and insights. Our voices will help guide meaningful policy recommendations and revisions, shaping a housing future that is more inclusive, fair, and equitable for all. Competing in this pageant is about so much more than a crown—it's a platform to shine a light on a critical issue: the NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) stigma surrounding affordable housing. Too often, this stigma prevents essential housing projects from being built, keeping countless individuals and families from having a safe place to call home. Affordable housing should not be restricted to certain areas; it belongs in every neighborhood, fostering diversity, stability, and opportunity for all. Breaking down barriers and building understanding is a community effort. We must challenge outdated perceptions and embrace housing as a fundamental right. #HousingChoiceVouchers #Homelessness #PermanentHousing Today, HUD and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that they are making available $78 million in over 7,000 HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) vouchers to Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) nationwide. The HUD-VASH program combines Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance with case management and clinical services provided by VA to help veterans experiencing homelessness access permanent and sustainable housing, as well as high-quality health care and supportive services. The efforts of HUD and VA through the HUD-VASH program have helped with the reduction of veteran homelessness rates, such as the number of veterans experiencing homelessness decreasing by 5% since early 2020 and by 52% since 2010. Additionally, VA and HUD partnered to permanently house more than 46,000 individuals experiencing homelessness in 2023.
