American farmers are achieving greatness, producing 550 million tons of crops, feeding millions worldwide, despite increasing challenges. Innovation is the driver of today's success and future progress. Companies like Corteva Agriscience invest heavily in R&D, but it takes years and millions to bring innovations to market. I felt it was time to spotlight that intellectual property theft is a real threat to the future of ag. The bottom line: to protect American competitiveness – and the future of the American farm – the government needs to significantly strengthen enforcement of its intellectual property protection. Please join me in advocating to protect American agriculture for future generations. #innovation

The hidden costs of global agrifood systems is at least $10 trillion. A holistic and systemic approach to measuring and valuing the environmental, social, health and economic costs and benefits generated by agrifood systems is needed to facilitate improved decisions by policymakers, businesses, farmers, investors and consumers. #hiddencosts #globalfoodsystem #truecostaccounting #sustainability https://lnkd.in/gd8a3bnn

Our Open Mic podcast guest is Chandler Goule, CEO of the National Association of Wheat Growers. He has served in the halls of Congress and for the nation’s crop farmers over his extensive career in Washington. Goule says failure to enact a new farm bill will only heap greater challenges on policy writers in 2025 and leave farmers with a policy that does not accurately reflect the financial risks producers face. Goule says the nation is losing wheat acres and growers to other crops that benefit from both advanced genetics and demand from new uses. NAWG supports crops for renewable fuels, but says unintended consequences from trade, farm policy and research could lead to dire and unintended consequences for the nation’s number one food grain and its growers.https://https://lnkd.in/gJdJPuid Chandler Goule National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG) Listen here: https://lnkd.in/gJdJPuid

You may not realize the vital role farmers play in the healthy trade relationship between the U.S. and China. Much like the ballast on a ship, agriculture serves as a stabilizing force between the two trading partners. Where does your food come from? The grocery store is the quick answer, but the deep answer is much more nuanced. America's ability to feed itself is dependent on our agricultural innovation. According to the USDA, the United States became a net importer of food for the first time in 2023. Agricultural innovations depend upon our 1862, 1890, and 1994 land grant institutions, but the state of their facilities are tragically dated to the 1950s and 1960s. According to the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU), American schools and colleges of agriculture have a combined $11.5 billion backlog of deferred maintenance to facilities and equipment that directly impacts America's ability to compete globally. I'm heartened that the APLU is working with our federal partners to invest in the future through the upcoming Farm Bill. There is much more than cheap food at stake. “For some countries the focus will likely be on the vulnerable actors and specifically on the contribution of agrifood systems to moderate poverty – that is, the overall distributional failure of sufficient revenues and calories needed to ensure productive lives. The report finds that, to avoid distributional failure costs in agrifood systems, the incomes of the moderately poor working in agrifood systems need to increase, on average, by 57 percent in low-income countries and 27 percent in lower-middle-income countries.” FAO #sustainablefoodsystems

FAO's latest report reveals the hidden environmental, health and social costs of our agrifood systems are at least $10 trillion every year. By using #TrueCostAccounting to inform policy and business decisions in food and agriculture, we have an opportunity to transform our food systems – and lives – for the better. Only then can we tackle the urgent health, environmental, economic and societal challenges facing us all. This is a landmark moment for TCA, and our community. Find out more ⬇
