To some, D&I (Diversity and Inclusion) are dirty words 😝. To others, they are just following what they've been told is the company way 🫡. Still others use it as virtue-signaling 🎺. But those people all have it wrong 👎! D&I should be your business plan🏆! Skeptical? A little side-eye? It's true! Let's imagine you follow American Football 🏈. Patrick Mahomes is arguably the greatest player in the game (but you can swap yours in instead). Imagine an offense populated with 11 Patrick Mahomes. How many games do you think they will win? What about their defense? I mean, maybe 2 Mahomes on the offense, and it's scary, but after that, generally, it's not a good picture🤮. This applies to the military, as well, but specific to this post, business. For businesses, we need to bring in people that think and operate differently🕴️. We need hard-chargers, contrarians, intellectuals, executors, leaders, followers, etc. This comes from attracting and retaining people from all sorts of backgrounds🧩 whether it be from different socio-economic backgrounds, geos, or different companies. That's diversity, and one part of the equation. The other part is Inclusion 🫂. Just because you want a group of different people doesn't mean you can keep them if you hire them. That's where Inclusion, or inclusivity come in. This doesn't have to be a large effort, but it's an effort for sure. Just like going to the gym, you have to stick to it for a while to see the results (well I do anyway!). Today, a huge part of creating an inclusive workplace requires understanding and uniting four different generations. Don't get me wrong-- this is no easy task. No matter what age you are, you are working against at least a dozen stereotypes. These can be extremely frustrating and cause serious rifts between team members. However, by consistently challenging these stereotypes and encouraging mentorship across all age groups, leaders can help bridge the divide.
