Worthy de Jong's journey started in Amsterdam South-East, and now, as he returns to Nelson Mandela Park, he's coming back not just with a gold medal, but with a powerful message of inspiration. By connecting with the young people in the neighborhood where he grew up, he's hoping to spark their dreams and show them that they too can achieve greatness. His presence is a powerful reminder of how important it is to give young people the chance to stay active, grow, and thrive in a safe, supportive environment. Seconds Out//Stories of Irish Boxing - High Performance on the Road to Paris is a first for IABA. This peek inside HP has been released 24 hours before boxing begins in the 1st Olympic World Qualifier. Delighted to act as Editor in Chief of this piece, produced in collaboration with Lowki Culture: ***************************************************************** “We would love to qualify the biggest team ever to represent Ireland – and we believe that is achievable”; so says High Performance Director, Tricia Heberle, on the eve of the 1st Olympic World Qualifier. 5 Irish boxers have already qualified for Paris – reigning lightweight Olympic champ, Kellie Harrington, Tokyo Olympians Belfast’s Michaela Walsh (57kg) and Roscommon’s Aoife O’Rourke (75kg); 63.5kg Dean Clancy (Sligo), and Dublin’s Jack Marley, the first Irish heavyweight in 30 years to medal at a Category A event. 8 Irish boxers will vie to do likewise at the 1st of two Olympic World Qualifiers. This short film, a peek inside High Performance, is part of a series of shorts on Irish Boxing – Seconds Out: Stories of Irish Boxing, commissioned by IABA and produced by Lowki Culture. It features a revealing inside look at HP, with Director & Olympian Tricia Heberle, Head Coach Zauri Antia, Coach Damian Kennedy and now double Olympian, Michaela Walsh. Michaela says “High Performance, outside of the ring, has helped me massively. For me, High Performance is doing the small things right. It’s now always about training or performing, it’s doing the little things right” High Performance on the Road to Paris delves in to performance analysis, coaching philosophy, technical & tactical development, High Performance culture, the daily training environment and preparations for Paris 2024. Head Coach, Zauri Antia says “There are many factors there (in success). The best thing is culture. Culture comes from many things, from traditions, from home, from community. Culture is behaviour…Life is about a battle between positive and negative. And I know, only in positive state of mental strength, you can perform best” High Performance Coach, Damian Kennedy says “We’ve always had a massive fighting spirit, and with the technical tactical aspect that we’ve brought to it, I think we’re on the right track to becoming the world’s number 1 boxing nation” https://lnkd.in/e4CT4TYS

One of the many reasons I accepted the #sportspharmacy consultant position to design, lecture and help launch the most #comprehensive sports pharmacy program (with a #clinicalsportspharmacist embedded with sports medicine/ athlete care!) in the US, is this: https://lnkd.in/gY32VWHz (present and past, a long list of the highest performers in their sports) Maybe some of these athletes took an ibuprofen or allergy pill or cream or any drug that might impact their performance, and for which we must check the status in sport before its used. #Athletes need more Qualified Sports Pharmacist they can look to for help as clean athletes. The stars were aligned with many other key factors, as well, to develop this as International Sports Pharmacists Network partnered with the USC Mann School of Pharmacy: >> Pharmacy Administrative leadership championed the idea, are knowledgeable and share a vision, >>the depth of experience and dedication and awareness of their medical professionals for athletic services, >>the relationship the outpatient pharmacist already had supporting the team, >>the interest of the pharmacy students, >>engagement with other departments, >>willingness to reform structures that had been silos, >>innovation with pharmacy counseling and public interface for the sports pharmacist, >>and more. Its the #hubofsportspharmacy looking ahead to #LA28 #sportspharmacists #sportpharmacy #drugsinsport #athletehealth #medicationsafety #medicationcounseling #pharmacyschool

Earlier today, i witnessed the return of the #Netherlands #Olympic team to Rotterdam! With an impressive haul of 34 medals, they've secured the 6th spot globally. Huge congratulations! 👏🏽🇳🇱 The Olympics is more than just a competition—it's a celebration of dedication, sportsmanship, and the incredible power of unity. Athletes from around the world come together, not just to compete, but to showcase the pinnacle of human effort and cooperation. Yet this year, I found myself unable to watch the competitions. Something felt off…. Have we forgotten the true spirit of the Olympics? It seems our focus has shifted to "Me, Me, Me"—my safety, my money, my views. Are we losing sight of what truly matters? Today's leaders often seem to envision a future for only a select few. We need a new vision—one that embraces balance and inclusivity. A world where accountability matters, where supporting actions like genocide is met with consequence, and where true unity is at the forefront. What steps can we taken to move in this direction? #Olympics #Unity #Change #Rotterdam #Leadership #sportsmanship

WORDS-MATTER WEDNESDAY. Like many this week, I've got #OlympicFever. Of course, the spotlight is on the athletes, but I've found myself drawn to the stories of coaches and team leaders. #Swimming Summer Sanders (1992 Barcelona swimmer). Coach says, "Make the Impossible Possible!" Summer couldn't imagine the swim time he was asking her to shoot for. Then he broke it down, lap by lap, and the goal seemed more attainable. Coaching the process, bit by bit, makes any goal seem more realistic. #USMS Missy Franklin (2012 London swimmer). Coach wanted to know what times she expected to swim; Missy hadn't gotten specific on actual race times but was more focused on "good effort" or "smart strategy". Once her coach had her focus on performance goals, her mission became laser focused. Goal setting needs to be specific and measurable. #UnfilteredWaters Katie Huff (2004 Athens Olympics). She had a less than remarkable first race and was affecting her focus on her next race. One of the seasoned older swimmers saw her demeaner, called her over and spent 2 minutes bolstering her ego and convincing her she needed to keep going and soldier up. #ToySoldier Sometimes, it just takes a mentor to take notice and provide words of encouragement. #UnfilteredWaters Leon Marchand (2024 France Olympics...and French athlete). There are still many coaching secrets that may come out in the archives, but Leon has been coached by Bob Bowman, the same coach who helped Michael Phelps achieve his 28 career Olympic medals. I'm hoping there will be a book! Most athletes will tell you that lessons learned in sport carry over into life. Here's to all the great #coaches, #bosses, #mentors who helped make the impossible possible. #2024Olympics #Leadership #NBCSports https://lnkd.in/gFa_ZDir

What matters is….
This Friday at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is the start of the athletics — I’m very much looking forward to cheering on my teammates! This excitement brings back a powerful lesson I learned during my first Olympic Games. This lesson stayed with me throughout my athletic career and everyday life: the importance of rest and patience. I remember the thrill of entering the stadium, supporters waving Union Jacks 🇬🇧, the cheers of well-wishers and being surprised that they knew my name. It was a moment I had dreamt of, the chance to compete at the Olympics and fulfil my dream of becoming an Olympian. Over the first two rounds, I jumped 16.84m, the second-longest jump of my life! With one jump left, I was determined to go further, fiercely psyching myself up to do so. But I didn’t jump further in that final round. Afterwards, my coach, Ted King, pointed out what had happened. “Do you know what you did before the last round? You paced up and down for 45 minutes in the Athens sun, prowling like a lion. You wasted energy, and that’s why you didn’t jump further.” It was a hard but invaluable lesson. We often burn through our vital energy reserves in our haste, determination, and anxiety to perform. Learning to rest at the right moment, be patient, and preserve energy are crucial skills. We have a limited capacity of energy. Mastering these skills enables you to achieve peak performance and sustain high performance over time. Rest is not a sign of weakness; it’s a tool for enduring success.

South Korea completed a clean sweep at Paris Olympics archery! As a proudly global Korean living in Hong Kong, but a Korean always, I was ecstatic to see the South Korean archery team winning all five gold medals in the event of archery. Aside from enjoying the moment of victory, I pondered why Korean archery is so strong. As mentioned in the article, the Korean archery team's victory lies in transparency and fairness. In the selection process for the national team, current ability is more important than anything else. Academic ties or regional background is not important. After selection, they must be able to endure harsh training. In addition, they were not hesitant to try a new way of doing things such as actively using AI technology in the training. The example of the Korean team is literally common sense. However, it is unfortunate that this obvious thing is not often applied in reality. How a company succeeds is no different from how to succeed at archery. #SouthKorea #Archery #ParisOlymipics Sue Baek CHANGWOO LEE Young Joo Lee Damien Green Yangwoon Chung Joongsoo Joe Sunhoe (Sonny) Kim

Rich Roll, Kudos to you, for sharing this valuable insight from your exchange with 2X Olympian Kara Goucher. It's no secret that success often comes hand in hand with taking risks and facing the fear of losing. Embracing this mindset is crucial for personal growth and achieving our goals. In my experience, I've found that being afraid to lose can hold us back from reaching our full potential. It's important to remember that failure is not the end but rather an opportunity to learn and improve. Each setback teaches us valuable lessons that can propel us forward on our journey. I believe that adopting a fearless approach allows us to push beyond our limits and discover new heights of success. It takes courage, perseverance, and a willingness to step out of our comfort zones. When we embrace the possibility of failure, we open ourselves up to endless possibilities and opportunities for growth. Thank you once again for sharing this inspiring message, Rich Roll.
