Aerodynamic wind tunnel tests are a decisive factor to most aircraft development and improvement programs. Core to these investigations are highly accurate six-component block-type balances. The Legendary Boeing F-A/18 using full afterburner for a night catapult launch: - Afterburners are a type of Thrust Augumentation method used If the thrust of an engine has to be increased above the original design value, one of the following methods may be employed: 1. Increase of turbine-inlet temperature, which will increase the specific thrust and hence the thrust for a given engine size. 2. Increase of the mass flow rate through the engine without altering the cycle parameter. - Both techniques imply some redesign of the #engine and either/or both methods may be used to update the existing engine. For example, the inlet area may be increased, but this would be obtained at the expense of increased #drag and #weight. However, in some circumstances, there will be a requirement for temporary increase in thrust for a short time, for example, during takeoff, climb, and acceleration from subsonic to supersonic speed, or during #combat #maneuvers. - Afterburning or reheat provides the best method for thrust augmentation for short periods. Afterburning requires another combustion chamber located between the low pressure turbine (or the turbine if only one turbine exists) and the jet pipe propelling nozzle. Fuel is burnt in this second combustion chamber utilizing the unburned oxygen in the exhaust gas.This increases the temperature and velocity of the exhaust gases leaving the propelling nozzle and therefore increases the engine thrust. Interesting and good update to the Heart ES-30 aircraft. The gas turbines are now wing-mounted (outboard) rather than embedded in the rear fuselage, into which the batteries have been moved. As reported, feathering the outboard propellers during all-electric operation requires almost twice as powerful motors (or a twin pack) driving a larger inboard propeller diameter. I presume the elimination of the drag from the large lower fuselage battery storage compartment keeps the motor size increase less than double. I don't have any proprietary info on this aircraft, but suspect that at least one of the gas turbines will need to run at all times during flight. Otherwise, how would the flight crew be certain that the two feathered turboprops would start every time (without fail) if/when needed. I also wonder if the turboprops will run during take-off to give it the TOFL (and fin sizing) benefits of 4-engine configurations. I need to find some time to model this in RAWAvCon. #Aircraftdesign

Exciting times ahead

Shadowgraph imagery investigating the flow quality in the Boeing Polysonic Wind Tunnel, capable of speeds beyond Mach 5. Built in 1959, the Polysonic Wind Tunnel is a blow-down to atmospheric facility with 8 air storage tanks providing 53,000 cubic feet of air pressurized to 610 psia. A pitot-static probe was used to calculate the Mach number and a 4-hole cone probe was used to calculate the flow angularity. Blows can range from 30 seconds to 2 minutes at Mach numbers between 0.45 and 5.32. A gas turbine compressor refills the tanks to achieve a blow frequency of every 30 to 40 minutes. The St. Louis-based tunnel was originally constructed for the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and is now operated by The Boeing Company. It has a unique history testing a wide variety of flight vehicles, from canopy ejections of the F-4 Phantom to aerodynamic performance of the Space Launch System (SLS). In what could be a breakthrough in #hypersonic propulsion, GE Aerospace demonstrated what is most likely the first hypersonic dual-mode ramjet using "rotating detonation combustion (RDC) technology in a supersonic flow stream" after 10+ years work on the RDC technology. Established ramjets and scramjets "can only begin operating when the vehicle achieves supersonic speeds greater than Mach 3" as they depend solely on the shape of the engine to compress the air to the density required for combution. The have no rotating parts like the turbines on e. g. passenger airplanes. The new technology doesn't have rotating parts either but uses detonation waves that rotate "around an annular combustion chamber, before being expelled as exhaust gas and accelerated through the propelling nozzle, producing thrust."
