#MaterialsThisWeek! In keeping with a theme of history for this July 4 week, I decided to mention the "#Tithables". I learned about this from a VDOT publication of historical articles called Backsights (available online at https://lnkd.in/eD4xeNpf , search on Backsights). Prior to the existence of the DOT, how did roadwork get done? In Virginia, from the 1600s all the way up until about 1880 (the DOT or Highway Department was established in 1906), every able-bodied male above the age of 16 had to provide 2 weeks of labor annually maintaining the road on which he lived. Teams of men were organized by the local Overseer of Roads, apparently a thankless job. There are several articles in the Backsights collection about this system of Laboring Male Tithables.

Lopez referred to climate change as a Gordian Knot, otherwise known as an intricate and insoluble problem that is only solved by bold action. He established the OML Center as a way offending solution to this complex knot. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, the Center unveils its journey in untangling the Climate Gordian Knot and retells the organization’s humble beginnings, as well as highlighting the people whose efforts contributed to the Center’s continuing growth, transformation, and success. The first of four knots feature former OML Center staff and heads, including Alyssa Manzano, Karis Dawn Salinas, Rochelle Bata, Luigi Toda, John Colin Yokingco, Perlyn Pulhin-Yoshida, and Marianne G. Quebral. They come together to share intimate insights and stories about the Center's early days, offering a unique glimpse into its foundational years.
