In celebration of #Juneteenth this Wednesday, June 19, we're highlighting the essential mission of the Diversity in Design Collaborative. In June 2021, DID was founded to foster systemic change by increasing #diversity and improving conditions for Black creatives across the #design industry. Since its founding, DID has reached more than 1,160 high school students across multiple “Designed By” programs in Detroit, Philadelphia and New York City, while engaging nearly 250 college students through internships, mentorship and portfolio reviews. HBCU courses often emphasize community engagement, leadership, and social justice, fostering a strong sense of cultural identity and pride among students. The curriculum typically includes general education requirements, major-specific courses, and opportunities for research, internships, and experiential learning. HBCUs are known for their supportive environments, smaller class sizes, and faculty dedicated to student success and mentorship. This unique combination helps students achieve academic excellence while preparing them for professional careers and civic involvement. 1.833.364.3422 (1.833.3NID-HCA)

On Friday, Sept. 8, I attended the MSU Black Summit 2023! This event focused on discussing and developing recommendations for the University to achieve Black Equity by 2030. The goal is aligned with the University’s Strategic Plan (“Empowering Excellence, Advancing Equity, and Expanding Impact”). This Summit brought Black faculty, alumni and students of MSU together to accomplish the mission of achieving equity, while finding the solutions to make sure black students feel supported and have needs fulfilled in order for them to graduate and be successful. It is the goal that by 2030, the 7% of black population that reside on campus will increase. Overall this was a great event that focused on Black excellence and empowerment of Black people. Furthermore, I had the privilege of conducting a recap on this event for my new internship with the DEI office of ComArtSci. Below is the first slide of the recap but if you would like to see the rest, you will have to check us out on instagram @comartscidei to obtain the two remain slides of the recap, that consist of the summit goals and takeaways :) ! #comartscidei

My Midsummer Dream for Black teen girls. It is mid-summer and Black teen girls are fully engaged in productive and worthwhile summer endeavors, but have they had a "Fill Your Cup" experience yet? For many teens, Black girls included, summer is a time to get ahead on one’s dreams through internship experiences, honing academic skills, or traveling the country playing a sport. Yet, I find myself dreaming of another kind of summer experience for Black teen girls; one that is equally as essential to their success because it relates to their sense of self, wholeness and wellbeing. A Fill Your Cup experience takes place in a space where Black girls are able to be their true selves and where their beauty, genius and capabilities are celebrated. Black teen girls, especially those who attend predominantly white schools, need a Fill Your Cup experience where they feel valued, seen and affirmed for who they are and not just for how they perform or what they produce. The Fill Your Cup experience is simple yet transformative and it has the power to sustain Black teen girls for the long haul in the school year ahead. If you have a Black teen girl in your life, do a midsummer check in with her to see if her plans include a Fill Your Cup experience, and if they don’t, help her plan one. A Fill Your Cup experience doesn’t have to be expensive, but make sure you are co-creating it with your Black teen girls so that she will leave the experience feeling affirmed, strengthened, whole and knowing that she is enough.

🌟 Help Your Child Navigate College Admissions 🌟 Every day, we hear parents grappling with questions about the best path for their child's future. Varsity basketball or community service? Internship, summer class, or research paper? Does piano playing matter to elite colleges? Remember, it's not about overburdening your child but selecting activities that resonate with their personality, aspirations, and the expectations of top colleges. Encourage them to explore, engage, and excel in what truly matters to them.🚀 #CollegeAdmissions #CollegeCounseling #SuccessPath Read more here: https://hubs.li/Q02hqfl-0

Summer is nearly here! For high school students, those long, sunny days → aren't just for lounging by the pool. The summer before your senior year is prime time, → to give your college applications a competitive edge. My advice is ”Use this free time strategically.” Here are 5 tips to make the most of your summer: 1) Work on application essay drafts. The personal statement lets you showcase your unique voice beyond grades. Use the extra time to brainstorm topics and refine multiple drafts until the essays sing. 2) Explore meaningful activities. Deepen your extracurricular profile by pursuing enriching experiences like internships, volunteering, summer programs, self-driven projects, or jobs aligned with your interests. Consistency matters. 3) Prepare for standardized tests. Before the school year kicks into high gear, dedicate focused prep time to the SAT/ACT. Take practice tests, identify weak areas, and aim to maximize your scores. 4) Finalize your college list For rising seniors and transfer students - thoroughly examine potential schools this summer. Consider factors like academics, cost, campus culture, and more. A thoughtful, tailored list positions you optimally for successful applications. For rising sophomores and juniors - dedicate time to researching schools of interest. Focus on academic programs, cost, campus life/culture, location/size, extracurricular offerings, as well as acceptance and graduation rates. An early, informed start on your college list will pay dividends later. 5) Schedule college visits. With fewer students on campus, summer is ideal for attending tours, meeting admission staff and getting an authentic feel for schools. *** Summer provides a valuable runway for motivated students to make headway on upcoming applications.

The IT industry is embracing partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to address the diversity gap in the tech workforce. Organizations like the North Carolina Department of Information Technology are spearheading this change with targeted internship programs for HBCU students. These programs are designed to offer real-world experience, aiming to integrate these students into the full-time professional sphere and enhance workforce diversity. With Black IT professionals significantly underrepresented in the sector, these intentional efforts by IT companies and HBCUs represent a strategic move towards a more inclusive and diverse tech industry. This collaborative effort not only benefits students by expanding their career horizons but also enriches companies with diverse perspectives and skills, driving innovation and inclusivity in the tech ecosystem. Independent Educational Consultant/College Admissions/Higher Education Planning/ Clinical Psychologist
FOR YOUR INFORMATION: Summer Opportunities When planning for college sometimes the summer opportunities are forgotten. Students may want to beef up their transcripts to be more competitive at college application time. Maybe they are lacking in AP classes, or want to explore a possible area of interest to major in at college, or show some skills they haven't been able to demonstrate at their high school. Some students choose to get summer jobs to demonstrate responsibility and independence. In addition there are summer programs that offer students interesting classes to challenge them, sometimes for college credit. They may want to pursue music or theater in depth and work with professionals in the arts. Or become involved in business or political programs with internships and leadership councils. Other students want the chance to live on a college campus to see what it's like. Some colleges have their own summer offerings, both academic and recreational, for high school students or host teen programs that utilize their facilities. This can help students gain confidence in themselves, help them develop their college list, and offer chances for dialogues with peers and lifelong friendships.
