In South Africa, there are high levels of inequality impacting children's lives. Urgent action is needed to address the insufficient Child Support Grant and challenges faced by children in foster care and institutions. The Welsh government have a new strategy to combat child poverty. I cannot say that this fills me with confidence. Yet again we have another document filled 'good intentions' but missing fundamentals on how they will ensure delivery of their goals. The article states: there is a fundamental aspect missing: accountability. It mentions working collaboratively, working with partners and "think community". These are great ideals but without money to back it all - how much will actually be achieved? Our "community" is in dire need; years & years of cuts and reduction of services - where are the Government imagining this support is going to come from? Great article by Lauren Crosby Medlicott about why a network of 10 single parent organisations wrote to the Child Poverty Taskforce today to urge them to include single parents in their Child Poverty Strategy development process. 1 in 4 children in single parent families experience poverty. This isn't inevitable. It's a result of single parents being ignored by policy makers for decades. At the Labour Party conference, the Government promised no return to austerity, but for many single parent families austerity has never ended. That's why at Single Parent Rights, along with 9 other single parent orgs, we are urging them to make sure the Child Poverty Strategy is developed with single parents at the heart. We look forward to hearing how the Taskforce respond. Great article in the Big Issue highlighting the impact from the two child limit. It's really important we ensure this policy is scrapped as a first step to addressing child poverty. Once that's done, we can start to work on the structural inequalities which mean so many are pushed into poverty in the first place, especially the discrimination and bias single parent families experience which creates huge inequality between families. https://lnkd.in/eDcwXfC7
