LAB-CREATED SAPPHIRES VS. NATURAL SAPPHIRES ORIGIN AND FORMATION The origin and formation of sapphires play a fundamental role in differentiating lab-created sapphires from natural sapphires. Understanding how these gemstones are created can provide valuable insights into their characteristics and value. Natural sapphires are formed deep within the Earth's crust, typically through geological processes that involve immense heat and pressure over millions of years. They are the result of complex interactions between mineral-rich fluids and the host rock. These natural processes imbue each natural sapphire with a unique history and identity. Lab-created sapphires, as the name suggests, are grown in controlled laboratory environments. They are produced using techniques like the Verneuil or Czochralski methods, which mimic the natural conditions required for sapphire growth but do so in a much shorter time frame, often a few months. Natural pearls are mostly associated with the saltwater molluscs, commonly known by the misnomer "pearl oysters", that produce the popular and valuable nacreous concretions. However there has been a significant historical contribution to the jewellery arts given by pearls produced in freshwater species. These pearl producing molluscs that live in lakes, rivers and ponds, notably Megalonaias nervosa, Quadrula quadrula and Margaritifera margaritifera (among many many others), are collectively known as mussels or freshwater mussels, with their pearls usually referred to as "river pearls". Please do not confuse these rare natural pearls with the ultra-abundant freshwater cultured pearls that are produced mainly in China since the second half of the 20th century, hence the importance of the word "natural" and "cultured" to clearly pass the correct product information along the supply chain as recommended by the World Jewellery Confederation - CIBJO. Since 2018 in Wyoming, USA, Jade Leader Corp has identified more than 5 hard rock, in-situ sources of fine Nephrite Jades suitable for fine jewelry work. Why?   Because Jade's history spans over 10,000 years through Central America (Olmec to Aztec royalty), Russia (Tzars), New Zealand (Maori), India (Mughals), China and Japan among others. Recent publications even suggest a history dating back to 24,000 years ago around lake Baikal. In every advanced society where gem quality jade was discovered, it was adopted by the elite ruling class within the population, often even forbidden to be owned or worn by the common people. In every case, it was revered as otherworldly and therefore a divine connection between the worlds, for health, wealth, status and longevity in this life and the next. There are a number of trade names related to precious corals, many inspired by local italian or japanese terms. Magai coral is one of those names, being a variety of Pleurocorallium elatius (mentioned as Corallium elatius in CITES Appendix III for trade monitoring) that is found at 150 m to 300 m deep notably in Japan and Taiwan (not in the endangered coral reefs). This species has two other gem varieties: momo coral and boké (or angel’s skin) coral, being a darker red and a pink varieties, respectively. Magai coral has an intermediate colour between those above-mentioned. As an actual fact, Pleurocorallium elatius does occur in a continuous gradation from darker red to light pink, and those colours has been very popular in high-end jewellery since the late 19th century.
