After private equity firm KKR bought Potter Global Technologies, a manufacturer of fire protection equipment in St. Louis, employees learned they were being given an ownership stake in the company. The goal is for KKR to sell Potter Global Technologies five or so years later, for a profit. If that happens, workers will get payouts tied to their tenure, on top of salaries. If past sales are any indication, the money can be life changing. "We've been doing it, but now we're going to get benefits from it," a hopeful Potter employee, Debi Brumit, said. https://lnkd.in/dhkuSmYv #employeeownership #60Minutes #privateequity

How's that exit strategy going? You know, that thing. Some call it a succession plan. Others, an exit strategy. Is it just part of your last business plan, if you have one? Most don't actively work on their exit strategy, and some do not work out. Plan A didn't work. No takers. Plan B didn't either. You don't have all the information, though, if you have not considered exiting to your employees. Here's a link to a story about my organization's parent company which was recently featured on 60 MINUTES. #ownershipworks #employeeownership To tie to my own experience... Early in my career at Parker Hannifin, a storied US-based international manufacturing conglomerate, I learned the value of employee profit sharing as relates to getting everyone in the organization tuned-in to market performance. As I was morphing out of the Finance department and into Operations, I'll never forget a conversation I had with a team in a machining cell on the plant floor. While doing a 5S event, we uncovered a YEAR'S worth of gloves and other supplies in a cabinet within the cell. We started asking some "whys?" and ultimately it was because there were times in the past when this team went in search of gloves in the central supply area and there weren't any to be found...so they started hoarding to ensure they could safely perform their duties when they needed to...they wanted to take care of the customer by producing what they needed when they needed it. We quickly started to collectively discuss, "...geez, if everyone does this we'd have years' worth of unneeded, expensive supplies when we didn't really need them...that's a lot of spent money that could have otherwise gone into the quarterly profit sharing pool." The best part to me was when a new person on the team said something along the lines of, "Yeah, I would never buy a year's worth of toilet paper at home - that would be crazy!" We worked together to solve the problem by better managing demand / usage and replenishment processes thus eliminating the drivers for hoarding. Brilliant. While that anecdote and profit-sharing program at Parker were impactful to me, I am re-energized to be part of this American-led, capitalistic & social experiment at KKR and Kito Crosby. The potential benefits of employee ownership at all levels could just be a real lever to help reverse wealth-gap trends that keep so many in economic discomfort. #kitocrosby #RAISE https://lnkd.in/gmHsDV3R

Something we might not talk about enough is that we’re a part employee-owned business. On 1 January 2023, our majority shareholder and Chair of the Sewell Group, Paul Sewell moved 25% of the estates side of the company shares into an employee ownership trust, meaning our people are now more than employees, they’re Co-Owners. Fifty years ago, CEOs earned 20 times more than the average worker. Today, that gap has turned into a canyon, leaving many chasing a fading American dream. But amidst this crisis emerges an unlikely hero: Peter Stavros, Co-Head of Global Private Equity at KKR and a heavyweight in private equity, championing the cause of employee ownership. In Arthur, Illinois, a town steeped in Americana, a daring experiment unfolded. When KKR acquired C.H.I. Overhead Doors, skepticism loomed. Would this small-town gem be stripped to the bone for profit? But Pete Stavros had a different vision. He promised growth without slashing jobs and made every worker a stakeholder. This isn't just charity—it's smart business. Stavros believes in giving employees a real stake in their company, fueling motivation and innovation. It's a concept that's reshaping the corporate landscape, one company at a time. But Stavros knows it's not a silver bullet for wealth inequality. Yet, for families like the Edwards, it's life-changing. Their mid six-figure payout meant no more night shifts, no more debt, and a brighter future for their kids. This isn't just a story from the heartland; it's a blueprint for change. Employee ownership isn't a one-time windfall—it's a lasting commitment to success, proving that when workers thrive, so does the company. Join us in celebrating a vision where every worker has a voice and a stake in their future. Together, we can bridge the wealth canyon and build a brighter tomorrow for all.
