365 RADIO IS ON A MISSION TO RECLAIM THE AIRWAVES  : Part 1 of 2 Have we as a nation moved from “This Is Radio Clash” to “This is Radio Bland” ?  We are currently suffering the greatest dumbing down of Radio content the industry has ever experienced. With the National broadcasting company seemingly hell bent on the utter destruction of localised Radio content, regardless of its quality. They're uninterested in paying any attention to what their active & vocal listeners want to hear. It’s continuing on its chosen path of seeking the lowest common denominator appeal by discarding much loved local & indeed popular national Presenters in a haphazard fashion.  It’s also seemingly willing to throw away generations of established, appreciative & discerning audiences whilst desperately chasing the audio equivalent of the colour beige. At the same time the Independent Sector has deteriorated into a miasma of automated pop-up stations offering sanitised formulaic musical content delivered by AI Auto-bots.  Commercial conglomerates are hell bent on devouring local independent Radio stations, destroying their established communities & demonstrating a disturbing preference for sweeping, robotically processed committee approved styles of generic programming. These “Now What I Call Radio” playlists have made a mockery of the Art of Radio presentation and it has sadly reduced the Broadcasting skills of the remaining handful of talented “Household Names” to be allowed air time to become nothing more than professional continuity announcers, playing nothing but “safe sounds” & “tame tunes”. It’s become the modern equivalent of Elevator Music but is being force fed on a National Scale. This shockingly poor programming is being actively preferred & chosen over quality personality driven presentation, meaning they are offering nothing more to their audiences than a mainstream chocolate box selection of tracks repeated incessantly ad infinitum. Stifling a listeners choice of available material and denying much needed avenues of exposure to creative artists at the same time. This year marks the 20th consecutive year of producing these amazing studies for commercial radio in the U.S. and Canada. During that time, much has changed in the world of media and technology. And Techsurvey has been there to catalog and trend it all. From the rise of the smartphone, social media, smart speakers, and podcasts to new technologies like AI, we continue to track what radio listeners are doing when they’re not listening to the radio. We’re also learning what “meeting the audience where they are” looks like by format and demographic so stations can strategically invest in the platform(s) that matter to their audience. The survey fields in early January, and you will be able to choose a “start date” for your station within a 4-week window. Every participating station will receive the nationwide results. For a small fee, stakeholders will also receive the results for their individual radio stations. This information is especially helpful to programmers and marketers because it clearly illustrates a station’s uniqueness, compared to its format benchmark, as well as against the entire study’s total sample. For this year’s study we are going back to 2019’s pre-COVID pricing (as seen below). You may also choose to participate at no cost, however, no local data is included. You'll instead receive the national findings, two separate media usage and brand usage pyramids, along with participation in a stakeholders webinar if you choose this no fee option. The trade journal for the broadcast industry, 'Broadcast Magazine,' has asked our founder and CEO Marc Putman to document his activities for one week, thus offering readers a glimpse behind the scenes of the breadth in which OUTtv Media operates within the European media landscape. Monday: Launch of PRIDEtv on PLUTO Today is an important day for us: we are exclusively launching on Paramount's platform PLUTO, the largest FAST* platform and the fastest-growing branch in our media landscape. Here we are introducing our new offering PRIDEtv, a queer programming channel featuring primarily short format content (shorts, music, documentaries, miniseries) in more than 34 countries. Our partners, Your Channels and Media Choice, have worked hard over the past months to implement this technology and make the launch possible. They have processed hundreds of items, created separate feeds for various European countries, and now we are active for the first time across Latin America. Adding FAST to our portfolio not only offers commercial exploitation opportunities but also a new marketing tool to entice viewers into paid conversion to our premium content. My afternoon starts with a Teams call with our international acquisition team to discuss the results of the Cannes Film Festival. We have already acquired several new films and completed deals on the spot, and for some films, we still need to further negotiate and assess the exploitation potential. Among others, we have acquired the impressive Belgian film AMAL, the Brazilian film Perfect Endings, and the Italian TV series The Club. We focus on queer stories that provide a global cultural representation of our LGBTI community. At 2:00 PM, I have a meeting with the European Commission, our international sales partner Brandadvance, and Paramount. To support our technical launch today, we will organize a Rainbow Brunch on Thursday, June 20th, during PRIDE Day at the Lions Festival in Cannes and formally launch the PRIDEtv channels. Together with the cabinet of the Euro Commissioner for Equality, Mrs. Monti, Ellen, Vice President of Paramount and founder of PLUTO, Olivier, and Chris from Brandadvance, we will discuss the speeches and the panel discussion. We have also invited former Eurovision winner and OUTMedia Award winner Conchita Wurst to musically support the launch. After this meeting, I have planned to prepare a presentation for a new lead in Latin America interested in selling our proposition in this region to local operators. Legal Alert! The Regulation Amending the Regulation on the Procedures and Principles of the Radio and Television Supreme Council Broadcasting Service ("Amendment Regulation") entered into force upon its publication in the Official Gazette dated June 13, 2024 and numbered 32575. As it is known, media service providers are obliged to inform audiences about the content of their program services in audio or written form by using the symbol system. The Amending Regulation obliges organizations to encode pre-recorded images in news bulletins and programs in the same way as they encode TV series and movies, separately in a smart sign system. The organizations will be obliged to broadcast all of the symbols required by the system after the credits at the beginning of the news bulletins and after each interruption during the program, as in other types of programs. In addition, if the system assigns a symbol or symbols related to a content group such as "violence/horror", "behaviors that may set a negative example", "sexuality" as a result of the coding of the pre-recorded images, the symbol or symbols determined by the system should be displayed permanently in an appropriate corner of the screen during the time the relevant news is brought to the screen.   Furthermore, if the system assigns the age group symbols "General Audience" or "7+", these symbols will not be required to be displayed on the screen during the broadcast of the news item; if symbols "13+" or "18+" are assigned, these symbols should be displayed in a suitable corner of the screen for the duration of the broadcast. As a result of the coding, the pre-recorded image determined to be broadcast with the symbol "13+" can only be broadcast after the hour 9.30 p.m. , and the pre-recorded image determined to be broadcast with the symbol "18+" can be broadcast between the hours 12.00-5.00 a.m.   In conclusion, the new regulations introduced by the Amending Regulation introduce significant obligations for media service providers. The requirement to encode pre-recorded images and news bulletins with a smart sign system and to display these symbols in appropriate corners of the screen for a specified period of time aims to make broadcast content more transparent and audience-friendly. Compliance with these regulations is critical for organizations to both fulfill their legal responsibilities and increase audience satisfaction. Tomorrow, 13 December 2023, after postponements, the #europeanparliament Plenary will be voting on a key text for the #audiovisual sector: the European Parliament Own-initiative Report on the implementation of the 2018 Geo-blocking Regulation in the Digital Single Market (2023/2019(INI). Disclaimer: This is a personal post + some of the links to support the info are in comments.   The entire sector (around 700 organisations) has cosigned a call asking parts 2 and 4 of points 24 and 25 of this own-initiative Report to be repealed in tomorrow’s Plenary vote, during what is called “split votes”; i.e. in this case, voting a point adopted in Committee in four different parts.   Why is it important for the audiovisual sector?   When it comes to the audiovisual sector, the question of #territoriality is counter-intuitive for many reasons. If I take the part of the sector I work for, public service media, re-opening the #Geoblocking Regulation and including the audiovisual sector in it, would mean that broadcasters would have to cover all EU countries with their programmes. #broadcasters have to pay to have the right to use these programmes and #publicbroadcasters are financed to do so for one country. In other words, this would mean forcing unsustainable costs for #publicservicemedia who are created and funded to address national audiences.   Then, I need to underline 2 points: first, a lot of audiovisual content is still consumed in linear mode “offline” (for instance, 43% of EU households use #terrestrial #broadcasting to have access to TV), and most of the professionally-produced content available on-demand is first created for this type of delivery mode.   Second, the audiovisual sector is very diverse: broadcasters offer on a free-to-air basis to their audience many many different programmes. Often, people only have in mind the latest series or movie or sports. But the reality is that broadcasters offer a lot of news and current affairs programmes, on top of documentaries, games, and dedicated programmes for minorities of all origins… and sports, films and series.   Finally: a lot of content is already available legally across borders in linear and, even non-linear / on-demand manner, without changing the EU rules. Many public service media are able, with the existing regulations and market conditions, to offer many services across borders. Examples include co-production initiatives, a pan-European networked newsroom and the Eurovision News Exchange. There are also existing agreements on transmission and retransmission on a variety of platforms, from cable to IPTV, satellite and OTT operators. On top of this, 18 public service media organisations across Europe offer, or are in the course of offering, #portability for their online services.   However counterintuitive this is, #territoriality must be maintained.   Maybe these points are better expressed by more important people: some of the greatest storytellers in Europe in this video 👇

Back in the day. The Bauer Media Group UK news this week announcing the rebranding of several heritage radio stations into the Hits Radio brand has had, what’s now become the traditional outcry from certain quarters, about the “death of independent local radio (ILR)” etc. The posts/comments all tend to coalesce around the, ‘it was better back in the day’ theme. But; 1. It’s not really news, some would argue what took Bauer so long. 2. You’d think it was akin to The Post Office scandal the way some are carrying on. 🙄 ILR as a sector does not and has not existed for a long time really. Its very own subtle rebrand to ‘Commercial Radio’ happened many moons ago and Commercial Radio is doing better than ever from an audience point of view, dominating (over the BBC) radio listening in the UK. This certainly wasn’t the case “back in the day.” These outpourings by the largely ex local radio chatterati are inconsequential to the big Broadcast Groups, they have a far, FAR bigger challenge looming over them. Fewer and fewer people listen via a radio set and a lot those that do, are using what is the increasingly irrelevant white elephant DAB. The great migration of radio listening is inexorably toward smartphones, smart speakers and other internet connected devices, and when the last bastion for DAB and analogue (the car) has more vehicles on the road with app based connected entertainment consoles, the only listeners clinging on to their analogue/DAB sets in a few years, will be those arguing for a return to the times of Leonard Sachs’ show at Leeds City Varieties. In the ‘connected’ audio entertainment world currently, UK commercial radio is NOT the dominant force and it is this that will be keeping its leaders awake at night. • Radio streaming has an estimated 16 million listeners each week • Podcasts listening is estimated at circa 22 million • Music streaming at an estimated 32million • Mobile Gaming estimated at over 25 million (Sources: Rajar MIDAS Autumn ‘23 and Statista) ‘Commercial’ radio NEEDS commercial revenues and more and more of those traditional radio revenues are and will increasingly continue to be spent with those audio channels that offer the greatest return. In other words, it’ll follow the listeners and with audio advertising opportunities in Audiobooks and Connected TV to add into the mix, radio’s share of audio ad spend faces a major challenge. Now one could argue that’s why advertisers should continue with Broadcast Radio advertising, as that’s where most ‘radio’ listeners are at the moment. However, with a forecast 90% of global advertising spend being traded automatically in 2023, broadcast radio has a real job to stay on the schedules because UK connected audio (as a whole) has FAR more scale than broadcast commercial radio already. As for “local” radio? It’s doing fine with professional new outfits like Coastal Radio DAB and YO1 Radio, to name just a couple, carving a relevant niche service.
