Broadcasters out there, useful second screen experience to call out from last nights live broadcast of the US VP's candidates debate. CBS News and Stations used QR codes to tackle the supposedly prickly topic of moderator fact checking. The VP's were encouraged to fact check each other to avoid any perceived bias from the moderators, users could scan the QR Code and go straight to a CBS live blog where fact checking was happening in real time. “The goal of the debate is to facilitate a good debate between the candidates, and the moderators will give them the opportunity to fact-check each other in real time" Claudia Milne, senior vice president for standards and practices at CBS News. Great example of using QR codes creatively for live events! Great spot Tim McParland! Source image: https://lnkd.in/dcwin9H8

Happy #WorldRadioDay! Circa 2017, I made my debut in journalism. Oh, how I've grown and developed throughout the years. One takeaway is that you should always believe in yourself first, and the rest will follow. On this day, we salute all of our #Radio On Air personalities who promote free expression and democratic discourse while representing society's different opinions. Radio is the world's most widely distributed form of media. It is also regarded as a highly effective #communication tool and a low-cost medium. So, could you tell me? What do you enjoy most about #radio? I will go first. Portability. I can multitask while listening. #WeAreDiversity, #WeAreRadio

This Q&A has many of my favorite things: government accountability, people bringing fun into their jobs, Weaver Street Market, innovative ways to cover public meetings and more. "The people are the government and the government is the people and what happens in government should be known." 🔥 A big thank you to Aaron Keck for chatting with me and for creating this cool series!
🚮 It all started with rolling trash and recycling bins. Since the early 2010s, 97.9 The Hill WCHL and Chapelboro.com have connected Orange County listeners to their local government officials in a weekly series, Conversations with the Mayors. When the three mayors of Orange County came together at the station to sing "Roll, Roll, Roll Your Cart" on air, encouraging residents to bring their trash and recycling out to the curb, Aaron Keck knew there was an opportunity for more coverage about local news and local government. The series not only helps the listeners stay connected — it helps the news staff keep up with all of the local government board meetings. #localnews #localgovernment #radio

I enjoyed this look-back from Elly Oldroyd on the 30th birthday of BBC Radio 5 Live. I remember when 5 Live launched - I loved it from the start and when I later was lucky enough to work at the BBC for over a decade, I got to know many of 5 Live's people including Elly, one of the best people in the sports industry. Two things that jumped out at me here: 1. Elly's point that there were probably more people back then who objected to women commentating on sport but you didn't hear them as much as you do now because this was a pre-social media era. Makes you think - however noisy the minority of toxic voices are now, that's just because they have their own means of broadcasting, and it doesn't mean we haven't made progress. 2. Elly's point about technology in those days (or lack of it). When 5 Live launched in 1994 I was just about to start my career as a local newspaper reporter (I started out in 1995) and I well remember that moment where, if you missed a goal for whatever reason, you were reliant on the kindness of press box colleagues to tell you what happened. In my case sometimes I was the only reporter there! But it would've been harder for female reporters I'm sure - these days, we understand male privilege much more, which is important for us to ensure a more level playing field. Much more work still to do in these areas but a timely reminder of how far we've come (and how brilliant 5 Live is, and its people not least the brilliant Elly Oldroyd). https://lnkd.in/epZMiP9i
