On February 4, 2011, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the #SunShot Initiative, an ambitious technological challenge (and funding) for technologists to reduce the total costs of #solar energy by 75% by the end of the decade. By September 2017 — three years earlier than expected — the SunShot Initiative had achieved its cost target of $0.06 per kilowatt hour for utility-scale solar. The program was such a success that the DoE has gone a little "Shot crazy." There are currently eight active #Earthshot initiatives designed to speed the transfer of basic research to market. This issue of Energy Today surveys four of them. The fifth article looks at an alternative pathway. The Ludlow solar field project in Massachusetts has successfully secured $15 million in green bonds through the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company (MMWEC).
