In the course of my work as a Brand Strategist, I’ve noticed that many businesses ignore the strategic aspect of brand development when starting a new venture. They are so focused on the visual expression or symbols/logo/colors etc. and do not realize that the value of the Brand not only lies in how it looks but in the THINKING and STRUCTURE behind it. A Brand needs to have a philosophy, ideals, values, attributes, characteristics, and a compelling story that weaves the logic and the emotion of the Brand together. People also mistake the Brand story for the company profile. They are completely different. The story of the Brand is the emotive story about how it came to be. What inspired the Brand, the business, and what keeps it going. This is completely different from the chronology of events i.e. the first commercial deal, technical milestones etc Once you have that structured and well thought out Brand strategy, (using best practise frameworks) you have a story to tell that can travel far ahead of your business footprint and create space and support for ongoing operations as well as new business opportunities. Having a strategic brand framework development from the onset makes a HUGE difference to the outcomes that you get. When you take a tactical approach to brand strategy development (i.e. work from design to implementation) you are likely to struggle seriously in your messaging and the attempt to attract top talent or high-profile investors to work with you on your initiative or ground-breaking work. People buy into a story - not necessarily into a business. If your story is not compelling, no one will take you seriously. Your Brand should be the platform that you use to tell that story, so that when you walk into a room as the CEO of that company, people already know that story. They know what to expect. And in fact, when stakeholders in business, industry, government or society have certain kinds of challenges and issues, your Brand comes to mind immediately because they know what it stands for and have a vision in their mind of what it can do. Be intentional about creating your unique brand purpose and story and communicating it effectively. ******************************** (btw - We have created a time-tested and globally applicable and locally- adapted brand strategy development framework that has successfully been used to create new brand strategies, refresh/relaunch mature brands and re-validate/refresh existing brands.
