"Bean counters do not get it." Recently a potential client was excited about procuring our CMMS. They took hours of their time to looks through our software, discuss options, design the implementation. Then Finance/Procurement got involved. They asked for discounts. They threw out objections relating to competition. They didn't want to schedule meetings to discuss things with us and their maintenance team. In the end, the Finance team picked something cheap that could kind of do some of what we offered. We lost the potential client over a few hundred dollars. My contact was super bummed. He sent an email saying "Bean counters do not get it." It's such a theme for maintenance departments. There's a massive gap. The moral of the story is if you're trying to procure a CMMS, get Finance involved early. Show them the 'Why' Try to involve them in demos, discussions, etc. Bridge the gap yourselves. Reach out to them instead of hoping for approval. Get them involved. This was a lesson for me and for our point of contact. Not everyone will see the value in what maintenance teams do, and that will eventually change. For now we can control what we can. #cmms #procurement #manufacturing #i40 #eam

Using Maximo As great as the possibilities are, I always wonder if anyone is out there working with the people who have just gone through an implementation, and are trying to get off the ground. As I travel around the country working with different clients and their reliability efforts, I am seeing many companies that never really get off the ground with some of the basic setup and use of the system. All too often, the system is set up by administrators and programmers, but not a lot of thought is given to the actual day to day use of the system by the Maintenance folks (Who are the heart of the system!!) If the system is not designed to make it easy to use for the end users, they won't use it as desired If it is not set up to actually capture the data you want, you probably won't get it Some thoughts on choosing and using a system: Why do you want to buy a CMMS system in the first place? Is it simply "We have to do something to get out of reactive mode, and someone said they got a CMMS and it really helped them get organized" What is your goal? Who is going to get the data you want? Which CMMS is actually right for my company? Will I actually continue on with what I set up in the first place (Hint: KISS-'Keep it simple, stupid,' usually works best. If you set up an overly complex system, but can't keep it up long term, you are wasting your money) Simply buying a shiny new system is not the answer to all of your problems, it is simply the start of a journey that will challenge you in ways you never imagined.
