Something unexpected happened a couple of days back. Manchester United beat their bitter cross-town rivals Manchester City Football Club in the FA Cup Final. But why is this surprising ? Throughout history United has been a dominant club not only in the Premier League but also across European competitions , but the narrative has been different in the last decade : - After the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, management uncertainty, personnel changes and average team performance has consistently plagued the club - In terms of the squad, repeated injuries to key players has marred the momentum across seasons - Rival clubs have progressed remarkably(not only on the pitch but also off it in terms of club development/financial might) - Poor performance has led to a 8th place finish in the current season and an ignominious departure from the Europa League - One of the football experts , went on to say that the Manager of United should be knighted had he won the FA final Despite these setbacks , this is a "David vs Goliath" story : - A youth led squad played a spirited game to defeat one of the best squads in World Football with several accomplished football stars in the City Ranks - A tactical masterclass delivered by Eric Ten Haag to outsmart Pep Guardiola(Manchester City Coach - One of the greats of the modern game) - FA Cup win means a place in the Europa League which was otherwise not possible due to the Premier League finish - With the season now ending on a positive note, there is scope for the team to be inspired, to be confident in their abilities and to build on this win This is also a lesson that whatever be the odds , never ever underestimate the opposition (Media stories/football experts had all but declared a heavy United defeat basis the squads and relative performance in the premier league) . It is also worthy to salute the indomitable spirit of the youthful United Team who not only took the fight to City but remained resilient throughout the game. 100% agree with this FT column. Top-class football should be a rare and valued event. Football calendars are already packed, with over 50 games per season for top players. Player injuries are increasing. Yet we keep overcrowding the calendar: ➡️ The UEFA Euros have expanded from 16 to 24 national teams. ➡️ UEFA Champions League and Europa League are expanding next season from 32 to 36 clubs. ➡️ FIFA’s World Cup in 2026 will grow from 32 to 48 teams. ➡️ And FIFA's Club World Cup will involve 32 teams next year in the US. Great reminder in the column as well: the world's top sports league, the National Football League (NFL), involves 32 teams playing only 17 matches each per season - they latest media rights deal is worth $113 billion over 11 seasons. Football: Manchester United Q2 Profits Rise! By Prof Dr Ian Blackshaw Despite their poor performance on the field of play, Manchester United have seen their 2nd Quarter profits rise. The net income was £20.4 million compared with a net income of £6.3 million for the previous year’s Quarter. That is, 12.49 pence per basic share, compared with 3.87 pence per basic share. Total revenues for the Quarter increased by 34.9% to £225.8 million from £167.3 million for the same Quarter in the previous year. In particular, broadcast revenue was up by 81.0% to £106.4 million, despite Manchester United’s exit from the current season’s UEFA Champions League, finishing in last place, and matchday revenue was up by 59.2% to £47.6 million. However, their commercial revenue was down by 8.8% to £71.8 million. It is hoped that the new minority co-owner of Manchester United, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the founder of the INEOS Chemicals Group, which also has interests in several sports, will help to raise the Club’s performance on the field of play! What a year for Women's Football in England! 🏟️Highest attendance in a single-game record beaten with 59,042 attending Arsenal vs Chelsea. 🔝England reaches the final of the Women's World Cup. 🏢 Creation of NewCo which will develop WSL and WC bringing it to the next level in the next years. 🏆Mary Earps wins the BBC Sports Personality of the Year According to a report by The Football Association (https://lnkd.in/eSvn7FAP)  🟨 Between October 2021 and October 2023, there was a 78 per cent increase in the number of female referees across all levels 🚺 Between October 2021 and October 2023 there was a 83 per cent increase in the number of active female coaches with Level 1 qualifications and above ⚽ Between October 2022 and October 2023 there has been a 12 per cent increase in the total number of affiliated females playing football and an 18 per cent increase in the number of affiliated female youth players.  🥅 there has been a 39 per cent increase in the total number of female youth teams since October 2021 – made up of girls aged between 5-18 years old – with a 17 per cent increase since October 2022. As a Psychologist working in Women's Football my wish for 2024 is that we continue increasing psychology provision at different levels of the sport, so players and staff can benefit from performance and wellbeing support. #womenfootball #football #sportpsychology https://lnkd.in/eFTMp2vz

Squeezing more and more out of “overloaded” players means “levels dropping”. What international players body FIFPRO calls “dangerous levels of fixture congestion” must give way to a realistic and sustainable football calendar fit for the 21st century. Future proof football means revising the calendar; but a win / win scenario is possible. Fewer matches means fewer injuries and emissions but also more excitement and engagement as players hit higher levels than ever before. ⚽ and the 🌍 are being degraded by the pursuit of endless profit.
