Founder/CEO Impact Lab | Fractional COO and CHRO | Executive Leadership Coach | Podcast Co-host |Member @ Chief
After being moved by Caroline Goyder's insightful post about the power of imperfection, I was struck by a profound moment during Audra McDonald's performance at the London Palladium. About 41 minutes in, Audra shares a heartfelt tribute to her friend and mentor, the late Barbara Cook. She recounts how Barbara taught her the importance of vulnerability on stage, allowing for true communion with the audience. Barbara's approach to performing—embracing mistakes and being her authentic self—left a lasting impact on Audra, who now strives to embody these lessons in her own performances. Audra's performance, rich with symphony and Broadway classics, not only showcased her immense talent but also her willingness to be vulnerable. This vulnerability fosters deeper connections and genuine communication, whether on stage or in leadership roles. Around 53 minutes in, she jokes about not being able to feel her toes and takes off her (gorgeous!) heels. This candid moment was both uplifting and refreshing to see, reinforcing the power of being true to oneself. And, Lord knows the woman needs all the oxygen and blood flowing through her body to reach those incredible notes! In leadership roles, we often feel the pressure to present a facade of perfection. However, it's in those moments of vulnerability that we truly connect and inspire those around us. Sometimes, the very things we put on to create the look of perfection can actually stifle us, and we need to let them go to achieve the greatest impact. Let's take a cue from Audra McDonald and embrace our authentic selves, fostering environments where open communication and genuine connections can flourish. You won't want to miss this absolutely incredible performance by Audra. She truly gives a master class in breath control, dynamics, and storytelling. Happy to report that our Banding People Together session with the executive team I mentioned was a huge success. When leaders shared their "ah-has" and what they will do differently, I knew I had infected them with new thinking lol. Some of what they shared: 1. Clarity = Speed 2. Showing them HOW to actually achieve the clarity was new thinking for them. 3. Our data helped them realize what makes their people and culture "special" and they were taking that thinking into talent reviews today. 4. While they've all done so many of these types of "exercises", getting real tactical mix moves to immediately put in place to create speed really resonated with them. They had fun and laughed a lot learning what famous recording artists they are most like when they work with others, learned how to adjust to their differences using the platinum rule and had fun rewriting lyrics to study language patterns. We also ran them through our songwriting lab with one of our award winning hit songwriters. The CEO said to me at afterwards, "The way you guys enabled everyone in the room to contribute was like watching a masterclass in clarity and alignment." So proud of what we get to do. To quote the late great Jerry Garcia. "Magic is what we do. Music is how we do it." Well...and a ton of science and data for our sound :). #teambuilding #executiveteams #leadership #offsites #alignment #acceleration #jerrygarcia #gratefuldead

Lessons in Authentic Leadership from Queen B! In the world of marketing, Beyoncé reigns supreme. With every move she makes, she sets the bar higher, and her recent branding revamp for her hair care line is no exception. When her hair care line, Cecred, faced criticism for lacking authenticity and connection, she didn't shy away. Instead, she and her team took note and went back to the drawing board. This willingness to acknowledge feedback is a crucial trait of authentic leadership. As leaders, we must be open to hearing both praise and criticism from our team and our customers. It's through listening that we can identify areas for improvement and make meaningful changes. Beyoncé's decision to release a video showcasing her using the products on her natural hair was a bold statement of authenticity. It was her way of saying, "This is me, this is my brand, and I stand behind it." Authentic leaders lead by example, and they're not afraid to show vulnerability or imperfection. When we embrace our true selves and show our team that we're real people with real experiences, we build trust and connection. Authenticity breeds authenticity, and it's contagious within an organization. When our team members know that we genuinely care about their opinions and well-being, they're more likely to be engaged, motivated, and loyal. Her branding revamp serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of authenticity in leadership. By listening to feedback, showing authenticity, and building trust and connection, we can create a positive impact not only within our teams but also in our organizations as a whole. So, let's take a page from Beyoncé's playbook and lead with authenticity, because that's how we'll truly make a difference. #AuthenticLeadership #Beyoncé #LeadershipLessons #LeadWithLeressa #LearnWithLeressa #AuthenticLeadership #ListenToYourAudience #LeadershipLessonsFromBeyonce. #TeamCulture #InnovationThroughAuthenticity

As Leader-Composers, it all starts with Listening. What are you hearing externally from your audience, e.g. customers, competition, and your overall market context? What are you hearing internally from your ensemble, e.g. employees & team members? What do you notice regarding your venue - e.g. systems & and processes? Based on what you hear, how might you compose a "demo" composition that creates a positive impact, testing it out on different audiences? Let me know your learnings in the comments below. #audiralabs #listening #leaderascomposer #leadershipthroughthelensofmusic

If you love Peter Gabriel, Kiss, Phish, Taylor Swift, Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Deep Purple, Rod Stewart, or 30 Seconds to Mars (just to name a few), then you know the work of Producer Bob Ezrin. I was listening to Bob on a podcast and my attention was grabbed by his take on how he approaches accountability with his artists: "I never criticize, I start with the positive, I listen to what we've done, and point out some moments that I truly think are brilliant, then I ask 'Is it alright if I hold you to that standard?' Inevitably they say yes." What a wonderful human centered approach. Setting the healthy boundary up is key. Every artist needs to hear the info in their own nuanced way. Too often as leaders we fall into the lazy trap of "one size fits all" and then wonder why people aren't "getting it". Accountability comes from clarity, that helps someone understand how their unique contribution fits in the the larger idea. That helps them feel impact and increase their desire to make a difference. FunFact: While recording Peter Gabriel's eponymous solo debut, Ezrin and a studio security guard duct-taped Gabriel to a pillar to get more "pain and anguish" from a vocal take. Gabriel was not permanently harmed, and both were happy with the result, quite a production technique. #leadership #teambuilding #accountability #powerofmusic

Get Up & Get It! 💪 Everyone has moments or days where they just want to pack it all in. But successful people recognize the need to just get back up and get to it. They do not let road bumps become road barriers. In my CEO Peer Group, we understand that things happen which may slow us down, but they do not need to stop us. We focus on moving forward through these times. Here's a simple song that demonstrates the point: https://lnkd.in/gF8FsQPx Let's keep pushing forward and achieving our goals! 💼🚀 #motivation #successmindset #nevergiveup
