The 2025 International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) is approaching fast! IPPE is the perfect platform to explore the latest innovations in the meat industry.
Our Emerging Leaders, Caitlin Hamstra, Ph.D., and Pernesia Nellum, stopped by the MULTIVAC Group booth at IPPE 2024 to discuss food safety equipment design and sustainable food processing concepts. Multivac’s involvement with the Meat Institute’s Food Safety Design Principles highlights its commitment to enhancing food safety standards. Additionally, their focus on sustainability addresses critical goals of The Protein PACT, including food security and reducing food waste.
Watch the video below to learn more, and look for registration to open this October to see these advancements and more at IPPE 2025!

Hi, I'm Caitlin Hamstrung. It's day two of IPE. I'm here with my fellow emerging leader Paramecia. QA Manager, OSI Group. We're so excited to be here at Multivac today with Matt Net. Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself and what Multiback has to offer? Yeah, hello, I'm Matt Melot, President CEO for Multivac US. Multivac, we're a company that offers solutions for food customers mainly around packaging, processing, automation and materials. And we're having a great IPP love connecting with our customers here. So what are some of the things that Multivac is working on to help? Do some like those CO2 emissions? Yeah, absolutely. So as an equipment builder, we think sustainability, that's our contribution to the industry. So we continue to work on make sure our facilities are sustainable, reducing energy needs as much as possible. We continue to design our equipment to be more efficient. So using electricity versus neumatic, which is traditionally used a lot in equipment has made a big difference. We now create designs where the machine can go into. Pause mode, so production stopped, you can actually hit AUSE and reduce all your energy consumption where in the past that would probably continue to draw at the same rate or nearly the same rate whether it was producing or not. Absolutely. But for sure keep focusing. Anything we design now is how can we do that more sustainably, right? So also assist you guys are really major leader part of the protein. Something else that we want to talk about was food security. Imaging plays a tremendous role in that. So we think we're very critical to that to be able to safely deliver that from the processor to the consumer and our packaging plays an ultimate critical role in in delivering that. So we continue to look at systems to better qualify that the package integrity is there before it leaves the plant that ensures through delivery and logistics to get to the consumer that it arrives in the same safe environment and safe condition that it was when it was made. Another innovative you've been around for quite some time. Yeah. So the part of the food safety design, what does most of that have to offer is a support to the industry. Yeah, For us, it's design equipment that can be cleaned. To be clean to a very biological level yeah, so that it's insured. But then there are also comes simplicity of cleaning it, you know as as labor continues to become an issue you've got to create equipment that can be cleaned but that can be easily cleaned. So that again is one of our design principles when we say we build a new design, sustainability, cleanability, those all become things that have to be qualified before we initiate our finalize a design so in addition to sustainability and food safety and food security and another big. Topic for protein packed is human safety. So what is multivac do to ensure human safety? Yeah, so our machines do a lot. They're operating, they're moving, they're moving very high volumes so we can produce very efficiently. You have to have safety design involved in that. But then it's giving accessibility to the machine to clean it, to do work on the machine but do it safely. So again, we closely look at every design to make sure that could it be accessed, could it be accessed because it's normal operation, could it be. This is because it needs maintenance or cleaning and look at that. So you look at the economics of how you design equipment as well, along with having the safety norms that any industrial piece of equipment needs. Absolutely. So I'm in learning and development. One of the things that's really important to me is training our folks to do the job safely and ensure the food is safe. So how do you support your customers in ensuring that the folks are trained to do the job safely as well? And it is so important. Safety, operational, all those things are so important. We continue to invest. We've got a very large team. We've set U regional training sites. We continue to look at online or virtual training as well to make sure that we have access to everybody. But for us, we have a team. I think there's 11 full time trainers within Multivac just for us. We now have 6 regional sites and everyone of those have training opportunities. Our customers need it. It makes our equipment run better. It helps our brand as well to make sure we have people properly trained. So training is absolutely a necessity. Matt, thank you so much for being here with us today. We really appreciate it.
