The Folly of Shotgun Marketing When onboarding new agents, we get to see the marketing efforts on a deal up to that point, including what agents have taken directly to the market, as well as what other wholesalers have done on their behalf. Overwhelmingly, we are seeing an increase in shotgun marketing. Shotgun marketing, for those unfamiliar with the term, is when the person in charge of marketing a submission sends it to all their markets, regardless of fit, and just sees what sticks. While this may seem like a good approach to the market because “no stone seems left unturned”, the truth is most often there is an excess of carriers on the list that do not write the class of business or line of coverage the agent is seeking for their client. *Why You Should Care* Shotgun marketing is not an effective strategy in the long term, as it does not build any trust between the marketplace and you. If anything, shotgun marketing sows doubt as to the submitting parties’ competency to underwriters and hurts your relationships. Overcoming that negative reputation when there is a legitimate deal becomes increasingly difficult. *Why is this happening?* Shotgun marketing most often occurs when staff are undertrained or otherwise unprepared for the marketing on an account. If undertrained, the agents or wholesalers working on an account won’t know which carriers are interested in what types of business. If unprepared, the agent/broker’s flow of business has increased to the point where less thought is going into the strategic marketing of an account than is needed. *What can you do?* Internally, agents can begin by encouraging staff to slow down, seek internal training/expertise, and to seek outside expertise when working on opportunities that are more foreign to them. Shotgun marketing should be a last-ditch effort and should only be used as a final option. Even in these cases, you will find that a phone call to your contacts will go much further than submitting frantically and hoping for the best. Finally, if your staff are lacking expertise or markets internally to find solutions for your clients you are best served focusing on finding the right focused strategic partners. To assist in this evaluation, we have created a Wholesaler Scorecard to help you quantify all of your wholesaler relationships and determine if you have the right partners in place to make transacting business better in the future.
