The Strengthening Organic Enforcement rulemaking updates the USDA organic regulations to strengthen oversight of the production, handling, and sale of organic products. The final rule, published in the Federal Register in 2023, was fully implemented on March 19, 2024. These updates are crucial for maintaining consumer confidence in organic products and supporting the continued growth of the organic sector. By strengthening enforcement, the USDA is helping to protect the integrity of the organic label and ensure that organic farmers and businesses can thrive. What ISN'T in organic? That's the real question. I see a lot of news and research looking into the nutritional comparisons between organic and non-organic. But the real question is what ISN'T in organic. Organic means your food is grown without toxic and persistent synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. (As per the Canadian Organic Trade Association). But organic also means so much more: "organic foods must be produced while protecting natural resources, conserving biodiversity, and cultivated with no genetic engineering or ionizing radiation and with mostly natural pesticides and fertilizers." When you are buying organic you are buying foods that are grown without pesticides and specific toxins but you're also supporting biodiversity. Keep in mind that in organic foods can be treated with pesticides from the USDA’s approved substances list, which includes products like copper sulfate and hydrogen peroxide. So if you're a cpg brand owner, then you'll have to do your own research on exactly how your products are grown. Which is why I often visit the farms of our producers for Avafina. For us organic is important but we also believe in nutrient-dense ingredients from plant-based whole foods. #organic #organicfarming #organicfood #organiccompay

In 2023, 47% of shoppers say that USDA Organic certification makes them more likely to buy a product, compared to 41% in 2019. As for Non-GMO Project Verified, 43% say that seeing that organization's "butterfly" logo makes them more apt to purchase, compared to 36% five years ago (newhope.com). All GloryBee organic honey is certified organic by Quality Assurance International (QAI) and carries the USDA organic seal. It is made without the use of GMOs and is certified Kosher by the Orthodox Union. But being certified organic goes deeper than a label. After farmers, there may be no more important group of individuals in our industry than organic inspectors. So, with rumors circulating that there is a shortage of them -- something that would create a real risk to the overall integrity of the organic industry and its ability to function -- I decided to investigate whether this was the case or not. My latest story in Organic Insider. https://lnkd.in/eMiBaWrD #organic #organics #organicfarming

Important Notice: HPTA Files Complaint with OMRI The Humic Products Trade Association (HPTA) has officially lodged a complaint with the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) regarding ingredient misrepresentation. Specifically, multiple products currently listed by OMRI falsely claim to contain fulvic acid, yet do not meet USDA National Organic Program (NOP) criteria for fulvic acid. https://lnkd.in/gHUvbeT9 Details of the Complaint: https://lnkd.in/gSWAbPkQ Misrepresentation: Several products in the Plant Extracts category claim to contain fulvic acid but do not comply with USDA NOP guidance, which states that fulvic acid must be derived from humates. Products in the Plant Extract category cannot be fulvic acids as they have not undergone the prerequisite degradation and humification process. Concerns about OMRI's Role: OMRI's miscategorization of these products misleads consumers and degrades the integrity of the fulvic acid industry. Call for Action: We have urged OMRI to enforce Section 2.5 of their Policy Manual to prevent misrepresenting product ingredients and manufacturing processes. Why This Matters: Accurate product categorization and labeling are crucial to maintaining consumer trust and the credibility of fulvic acid label claims. The issue we have raised is analogous to OMRI's present request for comment regarding the categorization of partially composted materials. HPTA questions the emphasis on having compost categorized correctly indicated while ignoring other misclassified ingredients like fulvic acid and plant extracts. We believe that addressing this misrepresentation problem is essential for upholding the highest standards in the humic substance industry. Thank you for your continued support of the humic substance industry. Together, we can ensure that the fulvic acid category remains transparent and trustworthy.

As many have suspected, #organics are only as legitimate as the certification organization that monitors and holds them accountable for their organic practices. OrganicEye has released a report that highlights examples of conflicts of interest. Takeaway: ensure you review the organic certification body before you buy. https://lnkd.in/eNwXqNY7
