New Post: Racelighting in Utah education: counterstories across contexts - https://lnkd.in/g4Q_Wwfb - The authors of this article– five anti-racist educators working in various educational settings in SLC– employ the Critical Race Theory counter-story methodology (Delgado and Stefancic, 1993) to confront resistance to educational equity in Utah. They do so by first providing a historical context of race and education in Utah before presenting four short counterstories addressing the racelighting efforts of students, fellow educators and administrators when confronted with the complexities of racial injustice. source - The authors of this article– five anti-racist educators working in various educational settings in SLC– employ the Critical Race Theory counter-story methodology (Delgado and Stefancic, 1993) to confront resistance to educational equity in Utah. Adult education is a crucial yet often overlooked component of our educational system and not really getting a mention as we head into the general election. Speaking firsthand with our learners, I know it's not just about acquiring new skills. It's also about opening doors to new opportunities, enhancing personal growth, and contributing to community development. Let's bring more attention to adult education and support lifelong learning. Campaign with us or, if you are a candidate, pledge your commitment not to forget our learners. Adult education is barely spoken about by political parties, and we want to do something about it – but we need your help! Without investment from the future government for community adult learning we will fail to reach those who need education the most. The news keeps telling us we're polarized. It's not hard to find examples of this when it comes to education. But we need not surrender to this narrative. In fact, our work with three communities (Reading, PA; Lexington, KY; and Clarksville, TN) proves that we can overcome our divides and create a shared agenda on education. And if we can do it on education, we can do it on any other issue too. https://bit.ly/3ROmJ3g

How can states and systems build bridges across divides to promote civic learning and strengthen our democracy? I'm in Indianapolis this week with SHEEO (State Higher Education Executive Officers Association) and the Civic Learning and Democracy Engagement Coalition discussing initiatives that involve students in civic inquiry and democracy engagement, with equity and inclusion at top of mind. More on civic learning for an engaged democracy:

“The fact is, the vast majority of young people go through school without a sense of purpose. Our school system does not foster it. The majority of schools and districts remain compliance-focused and attend narrowly to the flawed set of outcomes represented by our state’s accountability system, like test scores, attendance rates, suspensions, etc.” Roman Stearns thanks for sharing your story, the interaction with your son and his friend, your experience within Cajon, and your commentary about what is missing in schools. I often find that when parents experience these moments with their kids, they realize, in a new and more vivid way, how important early exposure to the world of work is and how important it is for kids to have meaningful conversations with caring adults about their futures. It’s a reminder of how learning about careers, by using job titles and student interests, provides broad exposure for the types of real opportunities that are available to kids, especially those who have little exposure to the world of work. As you rightly share- much of the credit goes to Dave Miyashiro and a board with as much foresight to understand such a gap exists in our schools. If I can be of service to Everett please let me know. I’d be happy to hear from him and share some career development ideas in case that is useful. National Review was good enough to publish an OpEd I co-authored with renowned economist Stephen Moore on the need for Universal Education Freedom in Texas. We decided to address this issue after discovering that a staggering 65 percent of third- through eighth-graders in Fort Worth failed to meet minimum grade-level standards in core subjects such as reading, math, and science. This is nothing short of an educational catastrophe. Even more troubling, this failure rate marks a one percentage-point drop in proficiency from the previous year, underscoring a worrying trend in student achievement that is raising alarms among local leaders. That is why it is vital for Texas state lawmakers to come together and adopt universal education freedom, an idea championed by Governor Greg Abbott. In March, Governor Abbott summed it up perfectly: “A resounding number of Texans support educational freedom for every Texas family because they know that no child should be trapped in a failing school just because of their zip code.” Please, take the time, and read our work in National Review and help support the drive for Universal Education Freedom.
