SITA’s 2023 Air Transport IT Insights report finds that both airports and airlines saw IT spend increase year on year into 2023. This reached an estimated 10.8 billion USD and 34.5 billion USD respectively, with over two-thirds of airport and airline CIOs expecting continued growth into 2024. Airports also boosted IT spend as a percentage of revenue in 2022 and 2023 even as business benefitted from an uptick in travel demand, signalling just how crucial a role technology will play in the next-generation travel experience. Aviation CIOs’ key investment priorities include a biometrically enabled passenger journey, leveraging data to unlock operational efficiencies, and green solutions to optimise energy consumption and emissions. Many thanks to the #ERA team for inviting me to an exciting panel around competition in Europe and how it affects regional connectivity. The European Commission is currently undergoing a review on the future subsidies of regional airports. During our panel discussion it was highlighted: -) how important it was to keep regional airports operational to maintain and enhance regional connectivity in Europe. -) regional airports will play a vital role for the development of zero carbon aviation as the first aircraft to enable disruptive technology will offer capacity and range which will rely on regional airport infrastructure. As a conclusion, airport infrastructure, airport fee structures and airport funding policies amongst others do play a vital role in the competitive landscape of aviation in Europe. Many thanks to Vasiliki Christidi Group General Manager SKY Express, to @Richard Lake CEO Eastern Airways, Henrik Morch DG Competition, European Commission for an insightful panel. #sustainableaviation #Embraer #Energia

Use an Airport Ecosystem Framework to Monetize Passenger Services ( published Nov.30.2023 ) #GartnerIndustrial Airports are at the heart of an ecosystem of data-consuming partners across the aviation industry. If one plane is late, all organizations must adapt. Airport CIOs should develop a data-driven ecosystem framework to optimize logistics and promote and standardize exchanges within the entire ecosystem.

General Manager, Operations and Head Terminal experience and Operations at Bangalore International Airport Ltd
A summary of the #trends in the #airport industry from the article and my take on it. 1. #AI will enhance operations, data management, and customer engagement (technology and data driven ops and decision making). Sounds cliched, ya? 😄 [ ] IMPO - This is inevitable. At BLR airport, we have taken baby steps towards testing these concepts and are fully convinced of it’s applications. [ ] Challenge - Limited ability to ascribe a tangible value to the benefits, and hence, convincing the board to approve these investments 2. #Sustainability will be an even stronger criteria in evaluating every decision an airport operator takes (#Responsiblegrowth) [ ] IMPO - More organisations will move the needle on this, even if it is due to sheer #peerpressure and to manage perceptions. [ ] Challenge - Risk of inadvertently resorting to #greenwashing. Risk of Investing in early stage concepts (due to excitement and urgency to show action) that may not be sustainable for long run (total carbon footprint and total cost of ownership). 3. #Aircargo can potentially increase its share if supply and demand side participants collaborate better and deeper (trust each other) [ ] IMPO - This has already happened and will only get better from here. [ ] Challenge - Resource side constraints (aircrafts, talent, on ground workforce) can significantly restrict growth 4. Enhanced #Productivity and #wellbeing of the workforce [ ] IMPO - Has to be a top priority for all. At BLR airport we started on this much earlier and we continue to use #technology and simple #innovations to enhance productivity and, additionally, #policies to enhance well being. [ ] Challenge - Keeping pace with other industries. Eg: Robotics in ops, #Workfromhome policies, etc are aspects that aviation will find difficult to compete with other industries on. This will make it harder for aviation to #attracttalent and #retaintalent.
