#interestingdata According to this US dataset from 10 East, venture capital significantly outperforms crowdfunding 💪 We (VCs collectively) firmly believe: 1️⃣ in the power law driving returns in startup investing 2️⃣ that venture capital is the best and most attractive capital source for the best and most ambitious founders aiming to build big winners 3️⃣ that the best startups will choose venture capital, providing the outlier returns and driving overall returns ➡️ An important consequence would be “adverse selection” for other capital sources in startup investing, leading to lower returns. This dataset supports VCs’ hypothesis and beliefs. LPs Doubt Venture Funds’ Startup Valuations Investors in venture funds are scrutinizing unrealized returns for overly optimistic projections, slowing down fundraising processes Close to a quarter of venture funds globally spent less than six months raising capital in 2021, according to Preqin. Only 12% zoomed to a fund close in such a short time in the first three quarters of 2023. The share of down rounds, or financings where valuations were reduced from the prior round, hit 15.6% in the second quarter of 2023 globally, a record proportion of all quarterly financings since 2017, per Preqin. More than 71% of global venture fund managers surveyed by Preqin in November said they expect private company insolvencies to rise over the next 12 months.

Thirteen percent of venture general partners no longer plan to raise another fund due to LP pullback. And, nearly 44% of venture firms surveyed in mid-2023 had postponed their fundraising plans due to concerns about overexposure to the asset class.....
