Running 200 km in 30 hours was good enough for 2nd place at this year's Lakou Backyard Ultra. Here are a few insights gained from this incredible journey: 🔹 Mind over Matter: The body can achieve remarkable feats when the mind is determined. Mental strength is the true engine that powers us through life's challenges. 🔹 Embrace the Struggle: Every step, every km, every moment of doubt is an opportunity to grow stronger. Embracing the struggle is key to unlocking your true potential. 🔹 Support Systems Matter: Having a dedicated support network will make a difference. The encouragement from supporters and fellow runners fueled my determination to keep going. 🔹 Celebrate Progress: Every milestone, big or small, deserves recognition. Celebrating progress keeps the motivation alive and reminds you of how far you've come.
Congratulations to our very own Brad Schroeder, P. Eng for winning the grueling Lakou Backyard Ultra last weekend! The race, taking place just outside of Devon, AB, had no set finish line, but rather, runners were required to complete a 6.7 km trail loop every hour, on the hour, until there was only one person remaining. Starting with 70 runners, one by one, the group got smaller as more runners were either unable or unwilling to complete another loop. After 31 hours and 208 km of continuous racing, all other runners pulled out and Brad took home the title of being the 2024 winner/last person standing.

The product of a horse getting from A to B is his or her stride, made up of stride length (distance travelled per stride) and stride frequency (the number of strides per second).🐴 The horse's height and limb length is a contributing factor while stride length is heavily affected by both surface/ground and the topography of the racecourse - slower going or uphill sections shorten a horse's stride and vice versa. There are exceptions, but generally speaking 5f sprinters have a higher stride frequency than horses who run over 1m and above. Here is last year's Kentucky Derby winner (Mage) compared to recent runs of this year's main contenders for Saturday's 2024 eagerly anticipated renewal. It's interesting to see the difference between say Stronghold (short length/high frequency) and Sierra Leone and Just A Touch who stride long and 'slow'...

The most legendary horse breeder of the last century: Federico Tesio. Back in the early 1900s, Federico Tesio shared his 5 rules for mastering pedigree analysis. And these rules are a must-read for new investors, breeders, and racing enthusiasts who want to achieve success in the thoroughbred industry. Here’s the breakdown: Rule #1: Understand the Ancestry What the audience cares about isn’t just famous names. It’s understanding how specific bloodlines contribute to stamina and speed. Don’t forget which one matters most. Rule #2: Look at the Whole Picture Most people who try to breed champions think a successful sire is everything. In actuality, it’s the opposite. Evaluate both the sire and dam’s pedigree for a complete understanding. Rule #3: Practice Patience It takes people a long time to learn this one. Success is not about rushing into decisions based on hype. Instead, it’s about practicing careful pedigree analysis over and over again—until one day, you achieve a truly exceptional horse. Rule #4: Always Be Willing to Learn This one is my favorite. Whether you are a new investor, a breeder, or a racing enthusiast, this rule still applies. And it usually makes all the difference. Rule #5: Think About the Future This is true for most things in life. Your goal should not be to seek short-term success. Instead, you should be more concerned with creating a lasting legacy in your breeding program. Then, and only then, will you follow in the footsteps of the most legendary breeder ever.
