Apprenticeships, a driving force behind UK automotive innovation since our industry began, are as important as ever in 2024 with an extensive number of employers seeking to introduce a change culture, of new ideas and cutting-edge technical skills. It stands to reason then that the number of apprentices across the country has been rising year on year since the pandemic, amid colossal business investment in new products and careers which are delivering future mobility. Successful automotive businesses always adapt and, just as products are changing so is the employment market, so updating recruitment strategies should be a priority. In particular, progressive and diverse staffing is proven to enhance business creativity and productivity. It also widens the pool of prospective candidates – important given the UK skills gap with rising competition between different industries for new technology talent. SMMT continues to champion diversity in the sector and this month we host two DE&I workshops, in partnership with Mercer Marsh Benefits and Queerify, attended by DE&I leads and LGBTQ+ allies across the sector. Apprenticeships equip women with new skills, empower them to achieve more and create opportunities for all. #InspireInclusion Apprenticeships have long been a powerful tool for promoting gender equality. They break down barriers by offering hands-on training, practical training for people from all backgrounds so they can learn the skills they need to thrive. By equipping women with new skills, apprenticeships pave the way for leadership roles and economic independence. A trend I am seeing is that the larger corporations are looking at apprenticeships, as a way to bring in a huge variety of talent. Apprenticeships offer an already developed programme to help ALL talent succeed. And for Creative companies having that alternate outlook, or lateral way of thinking is essential to keep on the edge. FOR YOUR INFORMATION: Creating Your Best Fit College List To create a best fit college list start by researching colleges online, going to college fairs, (in person or virtually), and speaking to college representatives that visit your high school. It is tremendously valuable to visit colleges and attend their information sessions and tours to have your own first-hand experience of the campuses. This also shows demonstrated interest that is tracked by many schools. To create your list it is vital to review and assess your short and long-term academic goals and career interests. Explore each college’s potential major(s) and minor(s). Identify college programs for unique situations such as three/two engineering programs, five year BA/MA programs, or colleges that offer additional educational support services Check to make sure the colleges on your list have other important offerings such as sports or Greek life; activities and clubs in your areas of interest such as politics, LGBTQ advocacy, creative outlets or community service; and that the colleges offer options important to you, such as internship opportunities, study abroad, housing or dining requirements. Community Bridges is honored that the "Bridging Pathways: The I/DD Peer Mentorship Initiative" is featured in the most recent issue of the National Leadership Consortium Bulletin, "Leading Anti-Ableist Efforts." The Bridging Pathways Intiatitive is a pioneering effort that offers a holistic approach to developing and growing the utilization of Peer Mentoring for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in North Carolina. In partnership with the NC DIVISION OF VOCATIONAL REHAB and the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities, we aim to empower individuals, organizations, and the I/DD system through a blend of comprehensive training, practical internships, and collaborative partnerships. Focused on real-world applications and professional development, this initiative represents a significant step toward inclusivity and empowerment of the I/DD workforce. Being anti-ableist involves actively addressing and reducing implicit bias and discrimination against people with disabilities. All apprentices must equally benefit from learning We need strong measures to make sure that the situation and needs of persons belonging to one or more vulnerable groups are taken into account in the design and delivery of apprenticeships, to achieve equality, diversity and social inclusion. Gender equality and balance must be promoted in all aspects of apprenticeships, including in access to training, in order to stop the reproduction of gender segregation in the labour market. It can be hard coming up with new content ideas for social media, and even more so I find in the B2B space. But, turns out, inspiration is all around us…every month! When I worked in the healthcare space, awareness days, weeks and months were a great catalyst for sharing stories, inspiration, resources etc. And it can definitely be true for other sectors. Here's a handy list of awareness days and months for Februay - remember, these are just starting points. Get creative, put your own spin on them - don’t rely too much on ChatGPT! And, most importantly, focus on giving value to your audience. ️Awareness Days: 💫 5th-11th: National Apprenticeship Week (UK) - A nice one to use if apprenticeships are something you offer  #naw2024 💫5th-11th: Children's Mental Health Week (UK) - Before the pandemic, one in 5 adults and children faced mental health challenges. Now, that number has shifted to one in 4. Whether you have kids or are part of their lives, this is a good opportunity to open up conversations about mental health. #childrensmentalhealthweek and source Mind 💫8th: Safer Internet Day - Raising awareness for online safety and security for businesses. Relevant for all! #SaferInternetDay #SID2024 💫14th: Valentine's Day - Show some love to clients, partners or even team members with a B2B twist. #Valentines2024 ️Awareness Months: 💫Black History Month - A great opportunity to celebrate and recognise the contributions, achievements and resilience of the Black community throughout history.
