Access to quality education is the first social determinant of health that we will explore in detail this month. Education Access and Quality is the connection between a person’s education and their health. Key considerations are high school graduation, literacy, and access to early childhood education. The percent of Lewis and Clark County high school students who dropped out of school decreased from 7% in 2009-2010 school year to 4% in 2019-2020 school year. The high school dropout rate over time improved more for the county and remained about the same for the state (2021 CHA). This is great news. But let's not get complacent, but continue to invest in quality education opportunities for all our young people in Lewis and Clark County! Partners in PROMISE wants to recognize National Higher Education Day! Today recognizes preparation for a path towards a higher education degree. So we want to take a look at transition planning which is part of preparing our Special Education Learners for higher education and just life after school. Per IDEA Transition planning should begin at age 16 but in some states its required to begin earlier. For example, in Georgia it is at age 14. Sec 300.43 of IDEA is entitled, Transition Services and recognizes the importance of transition planning for special education students which involves the coordination of set activities for a child with a disability: 1. Results-oriented process focusing on improving the academic and functional achievement of the child with a disability to facilitate the child's movement from school to post-school activities, including: ✨post-secondary education ✨vocational education ✨integrated employment (including supported employment) ✨continuing and adult education ✨adult services ✨independent living ✨community participation  2. 2023/24 School year has kicked off with fantastic momentum. Ellensburg School District welcomed learners back on Sept. 6th, and we're back stronger than ever. However, as the legislative representative for our school board, my focus remains steadfast on advocating for more sustainable school funding in Washington state. Key pressing issues include: 💰 Fully funding and stabilizing support for our kindergarten transition programs. 📚 Meeting the legal and moral obligation of fully funding special education programs. 🔍 Conducting a comprehensive review and acknowledging the impact of the McCleary decision. School boards, district administrators, teachers and parents cannot do this work alone. We should all be working together to advocate for better school funding and educational equity in Washington. ✉ Reach out to your local elected representatives and ask them how they plan to continue this work.
