The AAMC has developed a new resource collection to mitigate health misinformation in medical education. It’s National Black Men Physicians Day! “If you aren’t scared, you can’t be brave. So, if you feel uncomfortable at any point during this hour or on your own when you are trying to engage in creative practice, just know that’s doing it perfectly.” These were the words of Laurel Braitman, PhD, director of writing and storytelling for Stanford University School of Medicine, to a virtual gathering of health care workers and their loved ones from across the United States and beyond. In the Tiger King and sourdough-bread phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, Braitman launched a virtual writing workshop, Writing Medicine, to create a space for connection over the challenges and joys that come with working in medicine, or loving someone who does, particularly during a pandemic. But four years later, the workshop continues to draw a consistent group who share in an hour of writing lessons and prompts. “I’d say that the average feedback I get is just, ‘God, I needed this!’” Braitman says. Many medical schools see the value of offering their students and faculty opportunities for creative expression. Last week, Johns Hopkins Medicine hosted a Project Medical Education (PME day) where policymakers, local officials, community members & others outside of the #AcademicMedicine space were able to experience medical school firsthand through immersive sessions and simulations. Attendees simulated the delivery of a baby, drilled a burr hole in a model skull, operated on a pig heart, explored a medical evacuation helicopter and more. Thanks, John Hopkins School of Medicine, for such an exciting day showing attendees what medical school is like and the critical need to invest in #MedEd.

On September 11th, join the AAMC, National Minority Quality Forum and National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) for “Q-squared: Factoring Quality and Qualified into the Health Care Equation,” two panels on strengthening the health workforce.
