One of the best things to watch over Christmas for a long time. Sat with my parents who were laughing all the way through....superb work, humour and creativity it all involved.

One of the highlights of my festive season was re-watching all of the W&G collection (in order of course) with my nearly 20 year old who still loves and laughs at them all as much as when we first watched them. And then this gem, with SO many Easter eggs throughout. One of Bristol's finest exports. #wallaceandgromit ❤️

Really fascinating data, and potentially surprising for Hollywood folks who might think of Moana (and the first Frozen) as "new IP" swings — though given a platform by the broadly-renowned Disney Princess franchise.
Just adding to Jonathan’s point on Rewatch. Of the titles listed here, a few — including Frozen (2013) and Moana (2016) — were released in theaters prior to 2020. Until the advent of streaming, we would've looked primarily at box office numbers. What we’re seeing here is a catch-up effect by way of long-term library viewing — a more meritocratic full story made possible by the data visibility of streaming.
~45B viewing minutes for Moana at a runtime of 103 minutes implies ~440M views. Netflix's most-viewed studio-budget film of all-time, Red Notice, stands at ~230M views and ~27B viewing minutes. (The Rock happens to be in both!)
There are Netflix TV series that have excelled when it comes to Rewatch. The Great British Bake Off is an example of a well-loved title for library viewing year-round. Public viewing data can be found at top10.netflix.com.
A few potentially useful questions to add to this cultural discourse:
🏟️ Place: Where do the goals of Theatrical vs. Streaming for Film/TV diverge, and is eventization additive to cumulative viewing? Is there utility in thinking through the lens of “venues” for Games as well? (LinkedIn won't let me hyperlink in this post, but this is a reference to Jesse Schell's Art of Game Design.)
💵 Monetization: How should streamers best capture the revenue upside in rewatch viewing? Are there ads that might see particularly outsized returns when paired with Moana (or other ads for other types of content — e.g. cooking shows)?
📖 IP: How do we define IP? Is the Bible IP? (The success of The Chosen would certainly suggest so.) Is history IP? (Game of Thrones is said to have been inspired by the Wars of the Roses.) Are children's games IP?
🏁 Paradox of Choice: When entertainment options are abundant, what does existing IP offer in terms of moviegoing heuristics AND quality of execution?
🪨 Hero’s Journey: Combining the concepts of the Hero’s Journey and Maslow’s Hierarchy, what are things worth questing for? (Survival, Safety, Community, Love, Esteem, Self-actualization)
🏝️ Music & Water: Why do these appeal to the human brain? How should we think about abstract elements of spectacle when it comes to narrative or game design?
This has been a brief take for the modern attention span — in case you’d like to read more (and get some objective answers to questions like these), here’s a shameless plug for my Substack where I will occasionally write about (and shout out) ideas that inspire me and extend across disciplines: https://lnkd.in/g5MMqeCX. Or reply here to continue the convo!
I’ll be right-sizing my writing time-spend across formats based on revenue (and risk-weighted projected revenue). Thanks to all who subscribe! Happy new year!
Moana was the #1 streaming movie in America in 2024 as well as the last 5 years with 45B total minutes 🤯
some IPs age like fine wine. rewatched Moana several times with the kids over break and a few things stand out:
- banger soundtrack (ty Lin-Manuel for You’re Welcome)
- hero’s journey, not a love story (for both girls + boys)
- we all love islands 🏝️
h/t WSJ for the great chart
