As I sit here at the airport, ready to board my flight, I’m reminded of the immense power of kindness in education. Nearby, a group of women were reconnecting on their way to a back-to-school conference. One of them, upon seeing her friend for the first time in 10 years, tearfully expressed her gratitude. She shared how her friend’s kindness, as a teacher, deeply impacted her when she moved to the US as a non-native English speaker and now young teacher herself. This profound moment reaffirmed why we choose this career: to create lifelong impacts. I know I shouldn’t have been eavesdropping, but their interaction was completely infectious. The emotional reunion highlighted the essence of our work as educators. It’s about more than lesson plans and test scores. It’s about the human connections we forge and the lives we touch along the way. As we gear up for the new school year, it’s essential to remember that our influence extends far beyond the classroom. For many students, school is their sanctuary, the one place where they feel seen, heard, and valued. We don’t do this for the accolades or recognition. We do it because we know that a simple act of kindness can transform a student’s life. It can inspire them to achieve their dreams and, in turn, spread that kindness to others. This ripple effect is the true reward of our profession. So, as we embark on another school year, let’s hold onto this reminder of why we do what we do. Let’s continue to be a source of hope, support, and inspiration for our students. Cheers to the new school year and the countless lives we will impact! 💛 #BacktoSchool #education #educators #impact

✨ What Teaching Kindergarten During the Lockdown Taught Me About Life ✨ In 2020 and 2021, I found myself in an unexpected role: teaching kindergarten through homeschooling, online classes and later physically when the lockdown was lifted. As a secondary school English teacher, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but those little learners taught me some big lessons: 🎨 Creativity is Everything – From songs to stories, keeping young minds engaged required constant innovation since their attention span is very low. 🤝 Partnerships Matter – Working with parents wasn’t just rewarding—it created lasting friendships. 💡 Joyful Learning Lasts Forever – Seeing the world through a child’s eyes reignited my love for teaching. Now, in 2025, these experiences continue to inspire my work in secondary education and beyond. Work and play go hand in hand. Sometimes, the most unexpected roles teach us the most valuable lessons. 🌟 What’s a surprising experience that shaped your journey? Let’s connect and share! #TeachingDuringLockdown #KindergartenJourney #EducationMatters #Resilience

An unexpected Spa Day 💫 This really took me by surprise. An incredibly thoughtful gesture—a parent gifted me a spa day as an appreciation for the end of Term 1. It wasn’t just a gift; it was a reminder of the unseen ripple effects we, as teachers, have in the lives of not only our students but their families as well. As educators, we pour so much into our classrooms, focusing on shaping young minds, building confidence, and fostering growth. But often, we don’t realize the impact we have on the parents who entrust their children to us. Sometimes, parents need reassurance, a listening ear, or guidance on how to support their child’s learning journey. Moments like this remind me that teaching is not just about academics—it’s about creating a support system for families, nurturing trust, and working together to help each child thrive. 💜 To the parent who surprised me: Thank you for your kindness and recognition. It’s moments like these that reaffirm why I chose this profession. 📝 To my fellow teachers: Never underestimate the profound influence you have, not only on your students but on their families too. Let’s continue to give our best—not just to teach but to inspire, encourage, and uplift. 🌟To fellow parents: Gift your child’s teacher a spa day. #Teaching #Gratitude #MakingAnImpact #Educator #SpaDay #expatteacher

Have some thoughts stewing on being teachable and curious. Like for Native youth we're usually so hungry to learn our traditional ways and can't wait to soak up all that goodness but then I see this huge disconnect where older folks (young adults) treat it like a joke. Like they don't have the values base to see this as an opportunity or a responsibility to their next generation. They're so into colonial culture that they dismiss these ceremonies as "heritage" -- which is a v white concept to me but that's for another time. And whenever I see that same non-teachable know-it-all attitude in the academy, the I'm better than this mood, it's such a big turn off for me. Like this is literally meant to be a site of knowledge production, sharing, collaboration. All of that and they could care less. I know I've said it before, but one of my mentors Dr. Byers (Cherokee) always told us that we are building knowledge and holding it humbly. I can't imagine just turning up my nose at any opportunity to learn more, especially about my own Nations old ways. So there's two threads here that I'm pulling at but related by attitude in my head. Folks in community that act too good to be in ceremonial spaces because being Native is just a pasttime for them when convenient. And academics who aren't interested in learning anymore. Brought together by the same unteachable attitude that has me so perplexed. It is *such* a privilege to be in these spaces. To have access to ceremony. To be able to struggle with these complex topics in an academic environment. And yet they don't care. Idk. Thanks for reading.

📚🏫 Back to school in the USA ... By now, most kids in the U.S. have returned to school, and so have my two German children who are in their second year of schooling in the U.S. Despite their experience, there are still some distinctive aspects of American schools that stand out to us: 1️⃣ School Choice: The U.S. offers a variety of schooling options, including public, charter, private, and homeschooling. Public schools are funded by local taxes and often have attendance zones based on student residence. 2️⃣ New School Year, New Class: As early as elementary school, students are placed in new classes with different classmates and teachers each year. This practice aims to help students remain open to new people and adapt to change. 3️⃣ Language Support: Many schools provide professional ESL (English as a Second Language) programs to assist students whose first language isn’t English. These programs help them integrate into regular classes as soon as possible. I wish German schools had similar extensive resources. 4️⃣ Extracurricular Activities: American schools emphasize extracurricular activities, such as sports, arts, and clubs. Participation is highly encouraged and can play a significant role in college admissions. 5️⃣ School Spirit and Traditions: American schools often have strong traditions and a sense of school spirit, with events like pep rallies, school mascots, and dances. These traditions foster a strong sense of community and school identity. 6️⃣ Parental Involvement: There is a high level of parental involvement in U.S. schools, with many parents engaging in school boards, parent-teacher associations (PTAs), and volunteering for various school events. 💡 What unique features stand out in schools in your culture? ____________________________________ ✅ Do you operate globally? Education starts in preschool: where everything begins 🌟 If the future is shaped from the earliest age, what are we doing today for our children? Preschool isn’t just a step; it’s the foundation for all future successes. It’s where: • 🧠 The basics of reasoning are established, • ❤️ Confidence begins to build, • 🤝 The first social skills are rooted. 💡 A child who receives quality education from early childhood is more likely to succeed in school, in their career, and in their personal life. In our Latitude Bilingual international bilingual schools, we have witnessed young students opening up to the world, developing an insatiable curiosity that has continued to drive them throughout their lives. These early learning experiences in immersion have nurtured their desire to discover, question, and adapt to a global environment. This open-mindedness, cultivated from preschool, remains a strength that accompanies them in their journeys today. Investing in preschool is investing in the future of our societies. Let’s never underestimate the impact of the early years. It’s here that much of the path ahead is determined. And you, how can we contribute to giving every child the chance for a strong start? 💬 Share your thoughts, initiatives, and ideas. Together, let’s make education a priority from the beginning. #Education #SocialImpact #Leadership #Future

Creating Inclusive Classrooms: Embracing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion In today's multicultural society, fostering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the classroom is crucial. An inclusive environment not only respects but celebrates diversity, providing equal opportunities for all students to succeed. Here’s how educators can create such an environment: 1. Understand and Respect Diversity Educators should be aware of the cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds of their students. By understanding these differences, teachers can create lesson plans that reflect and respect diverse perspectives. 🌍 2. Promote Equity Equity goes beyond equality. It involves recognizing and addressing the unique needs of each student. This might mean providing additional resources or support to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed. An equitable classroom is one where every student feels valued and capable. 📚 3. Foster Inclusive Practices Inclusive practices involve adapting teaching methods to accommodate all learning styles and abilities. This can include differentiated instruction, using varied teaching materials, and providing alternative assessments. It's about creating a flexible learning environment that meets the needs of all students. 🧠 4. Encourage Open Dialogue Creating a space where students feel safe to express their thoughts and experiences is key. Open dialogue about diversity and inclusion helps build empathy and understanding among students. Encourage discussions about different cultures, traditions, and viewpoints to broaden students' horizons. 🗣️ 5. Celebrate Cultural Differences Celebrate various cultural traditions and holidays in the classroom. This not only educates students about different cultures but also makes students from diverse backgrounds feel seen and valued. Classroom decorations, special events, and culturally diverse literature can all contribute to this. 🎉 Creating an inclusive classroom environment that respects and celebrates diversity is an ongoing process. It requires commitment, empathy, and a willingness to learn and adapt. By embracing DEI principles, educators can help build a more equitable and inclusive society. #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #DEI #InclusiveEducation #CulturalCompetence #EquityInEducation #InclusiveClassrooms 🌟📚🌍 What do you think about it?
