To meet net-zero trajectories, the size of the grid will need to grow by over 50% by 2050, from around 68 million km of grid in 2023, to a range of around 110-200 million km in 2050, with growth consistent across all regions. Governments and industry should implement a strategic vision for grids, address slow permitting & approvals, address skill and material gaps and reform financing to ensure both transmission and distribution grids are scaled up around the world.
